Im in the process of developing arbitrage software which Ill sell on the basis of one user one license.

Would it best be done with checks that the license is valid without the user knowing, while connected to the net, or should I password protect it and have the software check each time its run? With the user knowing.

the first one is a bit sneaky and may put people off, the second option means more work as many people are bound to forget their PW's.

Any other ideas?

If they run a firewall they'll find out about it as soon as it attempts to phone home.

Go with the second option. You can always automate the Lost Password? tool on the service/product website.
