I have made many informational web sites but would like to start making some e-sales sites now. I can code my own shopping cart (I assume) but I don't know what program (server side technology) actually interfaces with actual bank accounts, and transfers the funds.

How is this usually acheive? I know this is usually done from a secure server. But who puts the program there, and what type of program is it exactly. Are there hosting plans where this is provided?

PS if anyone wants to sticky me a good online reference for this, please feel free.

Most payment processors provide a developer technical manual to use for interfacing with your cart.

You are probably thinking of electronic payment gateway.

Most banks outsource this to other companies since they do not specialize in credit card processing. Chase actually has a partnership with First Data to help process credit cards. And First Data also owns the LinkPoint gateway. Authorizenet.com also uses the First Data platform to help verify transactions.
