Why so expensive?

I am sorting out the logistics of a new e commerce business and looking at the cost of shipping a small parcel (0.5kg to 3kg) from U.K. to USA and other overseas countries. The shipping cost from the U.K. seems very high to me. Been doing a lot of research and comparison and still cannot find a cheap solution. Like to know how other dealers in the U.K. do it.
Do you
1) factor some of the shipping into the cost of the widget
2) tell the overseas customers the shipping cost (say average £12 or £15 or more - and hope that they still proceed with the transaction
3) concentrate on getting customers in the U.K. rather than overseas buyers

Which couriers do you used? Replies appreciated

Hi,

The best way to do this in my opinion is to charge one charge

For example:

£12.00 to worldwide destinations
£6.00 to European destinations and the ROI ( republic of ireland)

This way your customers know exactly how much to pay and this causes little confusion at the checkout.
There is very little profit on overseas destinations even by airmail or airsure, but if you are sending enough parcels you should at least break even on the postage although this cost should be built in to your item/items.

Something is wrong here. It only costs around 22p to send a letter from Hong Kong to the UK, yet it costs 28p for a first class stamp. The Hong Kong Postal service is actually one of the few postal services in the World which is profitable.
