With only 0.5% commission, I'm wondering how many people have actually earned $1000 in the 12-month period? I bet most people get only 5 bucks in a year. Has anyone tried it?

That would require they do $200,000 in sales. You're going to have a hard time getting that many small merchants.

Most of the big merchants would find the information on their own in my opinion.

Also, it doesn't include Ebay sales.

You'd have to make some cold calls - I don't think web marketing would work very well.

Any eBay PowerSeller is likely to gross 50k or more per year with Paypal.

An Ebay power selling is also likely to already have a Paypal account. Even if those commissions did count, which they don't, Ebay already markets Paypal extensively. Basically, you would have to be creating new Ebay users who just happen to become power sellers.

I doubt it is an extremely large percentage. Again, I would assume the type of person of merchant who is going to put $50,000/year through Paypal is also the type of person who isn’t going to need your referral to tell them about Paypal.

When I set a new website customer up that wants PayPal, and doesn't already have a business account, I'll use my referral link to do it. I'm not expecting anything big from the referrals, but any little extra is fine with me.
