Any good threads on the impact of having a login on a store?

I'm in an arguement with someone right now about the value of forcing customers to login / register before they can make a purchase.

Are there any good threads on this topic? (I'm not even sure what to search for in google)

Can't remember seeing a thread specifically about that (although there's bound to be one), but it's a topic that often crops up in other threads like:-

Not to turn this thread into a discussion, but I don't know where else to post it... a non-profit educational information site I optimized tested a mandatory user registration in exchange for serving up the information free, and found that they lost 50% of their visitors at that point. This isn't exactly the same as log-in on a retail store site... concurrent with registration was a newsletter subscription... but it might give you an idea.
