I am starting to make three new sites on a Linux box. I wanted to see if anyone has some suggestions on scripts or software that would be good and has some traction. Here are the topics:

1) Image hosting service

2) Public blogging service

3) Generalized Shopping Site (was going to use dealtime or bizrate co-brand, but they do not seem to reply to any of my inquiries)

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

1)You may want to hunt arroung hotscripts for this type of service.
2)Search google for "start your own blogging website". I found hundreds that are all low cost and easy to use.
3)I would reccomend OS Commerce for its ease of use.

Good luck!

Do you know any server side scripting languages? I don't think ASP runs on Linux but I know Cold Fusion does. Cold Fusion is great for begginers and is very easy to use and install, although pricey, I'm sure you can find a bargain on ebay.

You might want to check out some of the Open Source blogging and content management systems out there for the first two. A couple seem to be search engine friendly.

With regard to the Image hosting service, you will want to be able to resize the images for preview. The site can take on a giant server load if you don't handle the image sizes correctly.

PHP/MySQL would a good choice for the back-end stuff.

PHP/MySQL has a bit more of a learning curve but is excellent and the price is right(free)! I'm sure you could find more tools on the internet for PHP then just about anything else.

It was either wordpress or geeklog. I chose Geeklog. It just seems to fit better than wordpress. Now, I just have to customize it. Need more time in the day...

I'm taking a serious look at Wordpress and Nucleus for a new site and glanced briefly at geeklog.

Are you making the geeklog pages search engine friendly? And if so, is it built in or do you have to work it yourself with .htaccess?

Have a look at Hot Scripts (www.hotscripts.com) they have hundreds of scripts all listed.

Yes, all pages in the blg site are search engine friendly via .htaccess. Surprisingly customizeable. I did use wordpress due to their limitations. I have not checked out the other one that you mentioned though.
