are there different kinds?

I just read an article about smart cards, and it implied there are different kinds of technology but failed ot mention any. Any ideas?

There are lots of smart card technolgies the question is a bit broad and you need to narrow it a bit.

Visa and Mastercard are promoting the use of "EMV" to replace magnetic stripe cards. EMV - www.emvco.com - smart card technology uses additional security functions to make the card transaction more secure

Amex is using "Java" technology to achieve the same thing as EMV, Java is an applet, [wwws.sun.com...] that allows a virtual machine to run on a number of devices such as your mobile phone, toaster etc.

There are electronic purses that focus on small value transactions in use around the world. For more informaton, search on "electronic purse."
