Dear Sales,
I will like to place an order from your store. But before I proceed,I
will like to know if you ship down to NIGERIA. And also to know if you
accept credit cards as payment.I hope to hear from you soon Thanks.
Best Wishes
I didnt bother responding... its not worth it
Email him, tell him you'd be delighted. Then game him.... drag out the correspondence, ask him to say that he loves you.... even insist on a photograph of his mother and say that unless you have the photograph you won't ship the goods.
You'll be surprised how eager they are to please. So, do respond. I promise you - it's worth it ;)
Just to supply a small amount of balance, we actually closed a deal from a Nigerian lead which was legit. Our company requires payment by wire transfer on international orders, money has to land in hte account before the goods can ship. Apparently Nigerians arn't allowed to transfer money out of the country (?), which is why they always ask to pay by credit card (this is a B2B company - business is usually done by extending credit lines to customers). We had to set up an odd arrangement to get payment, but it worked out eventually.
The majority of them are scam attempts though, granted.
Yeah, and how much time did you waste going over all those Nigerian Leads to find the one that "worked out eventually?" And even then, they are probably setting you up for a Kill on their next order.
Both good points. The vast majority are weeded out early and ignored. Only leads which look a bit different get followed up.
They still don't get a credit line, and they still don't get to pay by credit card. Accounts here are pretty careful. The site generates leads for the company which are followed up by sales people, there's no online ordering, so they get a fair bit of scrutiny before doing the deal. Because of the nature of the business profit on a single order is sufficient to spend some time on deals which look like they may close. Sales cycles can run into months. Of course this wouldn't be workable for all businesses.
As much as I hate to say it, I wouldn't ever do business with a Nigerian online.

When I was in Austin, Texas in February my cabbie was playing King Sunny Ade (a Nigerian musician) on his stereo - and I asked if he was Nigerian, which he was.
We chatted for a bit and I said - "Hmmm... I think some of your old neighbors sent me email..."
He laughed and said "Oh, those fraud letters, yes.... It is one Nigeria's biggest industries."
If someone lives in Nigeria and owns a credit card he will not want to use the card on the "internet" and he will not expect firms outside of Nigeria to ship goods to him on a CC payment. I have friends and family there and am very familiar with many aspects of living in Nigeria.
Exception to this may be when he's dealing with someone he already knows/has done business with before and/or where the value is small and inconsequential and below the limit that some web businesses may have for security checks like address confirmation.
never ever do business with any country which has green in its flag.
That's funny. And might be a god policy (with Italy excluded).

Someone sent a typical-sounding email wanting to donate an unspecified sum. They are a successful businessman in [name your country here] and wish to donate.
After replying with typical information about our donation process, they replied a few hours later with this now-classic:
(paraphrased for brevity and grammar)
Thank you for your reply. I have a colleague in the US that is returning some goods for $7,000. I only want to donate $2,500. I will instruct him to send a cashier's check for $7,000 to your charity, and you please wire via Western Union the remaining $4,500 to our account.
I too have noticd a number of orders coming from Nigeria. I wouldn't normally mind working through these but the thing is i don't have time just now.
You see i've been asked to come in on a deal in the middle east involving oil export that will pay out $10,000,000 (TEN MILLION DOLLARS) very soon, and i'm working hard to get the security together to release this from the bank.
If anyone has a free paypal or escrow account please sticky me as soon our problems could all be over.
