How is this company so successful? 700 Alexa rating...WOW

I am wondering if anyone has an idea why Enigma Software Group is SO successful? Their flagship spyware removal product is 'good' but not great and there are many free removal tools available. Why do they flourish in this market? From the ads I have seen I imagine a large portion of their sales are from their affiliate program. But I am still left with the question of how in the world do they have a 700 (and rising) alexa ranking? Nothing I have seen sets them apart from any other product/company in this industry. What am I missing?

Regards,
Tom

Hey folks, I deleted a few off topic responses from this thread to conform to TOS [webmasterworld.com] item 16.

So, does any one have any theories as to the apparent success of the Enigma Software Group?

>>Alexa is a joke

Regardless of what's a joke or not, which is irrelevant, there are hordes of people out there who pick up junkware on their computers desperate to get rid of it who have no idea there's anything free to remove it.

>>Yea, Alexa means nothin.

Not so. A site with high Alexa ranking like that is just plain good for marketing; whatever the reason it conveys an effective company image. And imagery is an important part of a company's marketing strategy.

>>From the ads I have seen I imagine a large portion of their sales are from their affiliate program.

There may be a LOT of very zealous affiliates hawking a much needed, very popular type of product that are sending boatloads of visitors and generating a kazillion page views.

How can you manipulate an alexa ranking enough to get a new site into the top 1000 in 3 months. I'm curious to know. In fact I'll set you up a domain and we'll see if you speak the truth. Interested?

First off I wasn’t referring to the companies product being a joke, just that you should never base anything off alexa ratings.

A challenge? Why certainly Im up for it! Sticky Me when its up.

The whole point of this post had nothing to do with the way Alexa works, that was mearly a reference point to help people gauge how successful the site in question was. So the question still remains why do you think they are successful, alexa rating or not.

Before I setup a site, PM me how you plan to up the alexa rating, I don't want any property of mine being part of anything illegal or immoral, so if your 'method' doesn't fall under that criteria, let me know and I'll set it up within a day.

Your only indication of how sucessful they are is their Alexa ranking. Now that we have discounted that - how do you know that they're sucessful? Either you are speculating wildly or you work for them - which is it? They could be going bankrupt for all you would know!

To tell you the truth Im not sure how it works its software that I downloaded. Ive tested it and it does work. Using it on one computer Improved my test site in to the top 100,000 within two weeks, So im just gonna load it up across like 10-20 computers for a few months should do the trick. Well see.

I think we have dealt with that point quite well, actually...

This website should not be in Alexa's top 700. I bet they are using cheating software you can download to help your rating on Alexa.com.

The mind boggles at the irony. Those scripts for boosting alexa ratings are probably free because they are spyware. Enigma also advertises via pop-ups (according to their affiliate program info page).

Maybe they're #700 because all their affiliates have an Alexa toolbar installed? Anyhow, their affiliate program does sound fairly generous so they probably are getting a lot of traffic.

Oh, I had another chuckle when my browser alerted me that their SSL certificate expired 3 days ago.

Does this Alexabooster really work, or has Alexa caught on to this scam. The only reason I would use
this software, is to scare the crap out of the competition.

If I really wanted a high alexa score, I would sign up with Yahoo stores and have a alexa ranking of 2 :)

Tried Alexa b***ter. The first day I moved up into
the low 30 thousands. On the second day, my one day
spike was wiped off the chart, and I was back to
what I was before, despite continuing to use the software.

It is obvious that Alexa has a list of proxies, and
are countering the default proxy list from Alexa B***ter, or other proxy cheating software.

By installing the Alexa Toolbar on your staff's computers you should be able to increase the Alexa rating a lot (tested). Maybe all their staff is using the Alexa Toolbar and hence they are rated high. If you look at their Traffic stats, last december they had a sudden increase of traffic, that could indicate exactly this (staff using toolbar).

The description of Alex Booster at Download.com speaks volumes. How would google be able to read your server logs anyway:

When Google indexes your site, it will see in your log that you are receiving loads of hits thus giving your site more listing results simply because the Googlebot thinks your site must be relevant so it increase your results! To sum it up the Alexa Booster will help increase your online business!

Better stay away from it. Getting penalized by Google or Alexa is something that you don't want.

I would install the Alexa toolbar on all my business computers. Do you think you would really get penalized just because you are using their product? I would hope they wouldn't do that. As long as you aren't there refreshing the page every second (spamming hits), I can't imagine having the toolbar would hurt you. My opinion.

The logfile is ussally protected. If google can read
your log file, then your competition can to. For that
reason everybody locks down the log file.

I would not cry a single tear, if alexa ban me. The
only purpose for me to boost my Alexa ranking is for

a) an ego boosting trip

b) to confuse any competion, if they are stupid enough
to believe alexa results.

Since Google has no relationship with Alexa, why would
they care what you did with Alexa.

from my logs i show you need about 11 unique visitors with the toolbar installed to get in the top 20,000

A site I promoted went to the top of its category after just a couple of days of promotion via Adwords.

Any idea what percentage of internet users have the Alexa toolbar installed?
