However, there is a photo shop nearby who might take over the logistics of making the print and mailing it to the customer. They would receive an email from me with the images to print and the address of the customer and take care of everything.
What I need now is sort of a shopping cart system (preferably in PHP) with which people can choose images to print and pay. My idea would be to place 'Order print' buttons on the image pages, then people can choose the print size, continue browsing and possibly choose other pictures. Then they proceed to the exit and pay. Payment should be done via Paypal and the software should compute the exact amount, inclusive of the shipping expense (which depends on the size of the prints and the customer location). The customer then would pay by credit card through Paypal, and Paypal should send a confirmation that payment has been made. The software then automatically mails the image files and the order to the photo shop.
I don't expect a huge turnover from this - perhaps between $50 to $200 oer month, so the initial investment should be moderate. What software package would you recommend?
what is "Mals Ecom"?
google does not even find it :(
Strange - a Google search for "mals e-com" produces their site as the top result. Unfortunately they offer no integration with PayPal if I understood things correctly.
i guess this shopping cart can do what you want
it's commersial but really good - i use it myself
But it's $185 and I'd prefer to invest less, as I don't know if this business will work or not.
Do they support Paypal? If not, are the other payment systems they support equivalent or better? I will need to ship these prints around the world.

well, i guess i've found it... on the second page
pretty starnge to see the cart's rating lower than forum posts discussing it
i've looked at the demo. it was scaring, sorry
perhaps my demands are too high, but it definitly is not a cart i would work with
and no live stores there :(

true, but i'd bet your business would go much better with something pretty than something scary. if you are going to fail why to start?

if i remember right they support about 60 payment gateways and paypal's surely among them.
if you have questions about functionality you should better ask x-cart. i guess they'd answer better than i can
Nothing to buy, nothing to install, just simple instructions to follow. Well, setting up the shipping table the first time can get a little confusing, but its a very powerful tool.
If you want to test the market, its the easiest way to go. If its a hit, then buy your own solution and spend the time setting it up, figuring it out, while you are making money.
