I plan to build a message forum for my company employees. Was wondering if there were any basic rules to be followed for the same? What would be the most basic functionality in the forum that I could start with?

Why don't you use one of those free scripts around? There are some pretty sophistocated forum scripts written in either ASP or PHP.

I've used Yabb a couple of times. Found it very versatile and easy to set up and customise.

[simplemachines.org...] has excellent forum software. I'd highly recommend them.
