Hello to all! I have recently become disabled and have thought that I would throw my hat into the e-commerce ring. I have seen all the the ads for the internet gurus' and wonder just how many of them are scam artist. I guess what I would like to know is what legitmate ways are there to make money on the web? I don't have alot of money to get started and at this point I don't even have a webpage. I know basic HTML and have been to several tutor sites. I cringe evertime I see one of those ads that say make $100,000 a month on the web in the next six months (probably not exactly worded right but you get the picture). I just want to know how to get started and what options I might consider. I'm really not sure what I wanna do but I know I wanna make money.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Gary

Welcome to Webmaster World. People whose web business succeed from the word go have a clear idea how to generate traffic for their web site and also a product(s) that sell well on the Internet.

The majority of the participants in this forum sells physical products. But if you have some disability, perhaps this is not a good choice for you as it would involve some physical work. Otherwise, this would be the best forum available.

I suggest that you either start off by being an affiliate, resell some information products or software, or provide a service. One forum to look for ideas is the warrior forum.

[warriorforum.com...]

Although it is true that most individuals there would be lucky to make more than a few hundred dollars a month, some do make it big time.

Good luck

Derek

Welcome to WebmasterWorld Gary,
There are many ways to make money on the WWW. Since you're new to the game I strongly suggest you spend some serious time researching and reading some of the past threads here. The basic concepts for generating $$ come from

a) selling a product/service,
b) selling traffic, and
c) selling advertising.

Under each of those categories there lie multiple nuances. For instance - selling a product/service. It could be your own product or it might be someone elses (drop shipping). You'll find a ton of information here on all of these (and maybe a few more) that should help you get started.

My suggestion is that you focus on general concepts and try not to get bogged down in the details just yet. Spend the time reading and choose one of the concepts that suits your lifestyle. Then teach yourself what you need to know and build it.

Don't count on seeing a significant profit for sometime. It takes time to play the game especially for newcomers. It may seem daunting but it's well worth the effort if you can play the game smart and have the patience and fortitude to pursue it. Good luck.

I haven't been at it too long, and have made some money, but not enough to pay the bills. I'd like to know how long it took the people that are making the serious money ( say $4000+ USD per month ) to get to where they're at now.

I've been doing it for 5 months now, I've grossed 3k this month. I haven't been gaining too quickly, I did 5k in my first 3 months. But I'm only getting around 100 uniques a day to my site. I'm still looking for ways to improve sales, I still spend way too much time not working. I am looking at forms of advertising other than PPC, and also considering starting an affiliate program.

There is no such thing as get rich quick unless you are talking about the lottery. First you will need to figure out what you want to sell, preferably something you have experience with. The website part isn't too hard. You can start off with Paypal for a simple shopping cart interface. The trickiest part is getting people to your site.

Gary

A couple common sayings I have heard during my life that alway seems to ring true are:

"People who get rich quick, will have many more chances to get poor quicker"
and
"If it sounds too good to be true, most likely it is."

Using the advice others have offered, if you are dedicated, willing to put in lots of hours of effort and persistant, you can turn the web into a great money making opportunity. How well you can do is pretty much a direct correlation to how much effort your willing to put forth.

As for your disability, that shouldn't be much of a factor at all. I'm sure there are many people making outstanding money on the internet that have a disability and rightfully so, because being successful here isn't about what you are on the outside, but rather who you are on the inside.
