Am starting a new website for manufactured food - roasted coffee beans- and thought that a few of my own internal questions might prove helpful to others just beginning. We decided to hire a professional web developer because (1) Can't yell at myself if I do it wrong, (2) Can't be sure of the latest stuff that works if we hired an amateur, a neighbor, or just did it ourselvs, (3) Needed someone to answer our stupid questions and yes, that's handholding and that's Priceless.

Side business note; By committing a set amount upfront to this new excursion, the questions-"Does it work? & What is necessary to make it work?" will be answered rather quickly 'cause we will pay attention. (I hope!)

Any general comments as we jump into the (ecommerce website) pool?

Interestingly, I was buying a new coffee machine for the office last Friday. (Going to get a Newco ACE-D.) Coffee is hot on the web.

You need to find someone who can talk the lingo of consumer goods. It's an emotional purchase when it comes down to who they're going to buy from--the consumer doesn't understand the finer technical differences, even when extreme. It's just coffee and they want the best. Or fastest. Or cheapest. Or most stylish to impress their friends.

Don't forget a toll-free number. A lot of people just want to pick up the phone.
