Hi all

I'm a website designer by hobby and have been doing odd jobs for a quick buck here and there. I've done the most basic to enterprise level so I know it all, design, database, programming, etc.

However, now im interested in starting some kinda ad portal website, and more if I am sucessful. I already know what kind of ad portal I want to create, but I have NO idea where or how to get traffic to the ad portal or paying clients. Since I know some people make alot of money off ad portals, can you guys give me some direction on how to get started?

Kaul,

Sorry to inform you, but your about 5 - 7 years late to the game. You would be going against to many blue chips, and unless you have a bundle of ca$h, then it ain't going to happen.

Yes I know im very late into the game but I want to give it a try anyway. I'm not trying to get rich, just see if I can make a few bucks on the side with minimal risk.

So what is the process in starting one? How do I get clients and traffic?

I could probably get a decent amount of traffic with some misleading newspaper ads and spam or something, I need to have *something* already on the page for people to see, clients. But I wont get clients until there is traffic. So what do I do in the start?

You would need some sort of portal or site software first. Most come with default templates that can be used, but it would be best to either create a new set of templates under your own creative design. The cookie cutter sites are very plain, and their are thousands (if not millions) other there. You would need to stand out on your own in some way or form in order to get noticed.

After that, you need to get integrated into the search engines. The majors are usually free, but some will cost $$$ like Yahoo & Business dot com. After that, you would then need to drive paid traffic to your site. This could be thru Google's Adwords, Overture, Findnothing, SearchFeed, etc.

Then, you would really need to keep the content fresh and informative. Start on a topic that you know, let's say Internet Marketing. You can have help tools, guides, links to partner sites, etc.

After that and when you have a better than average traffic level, companies will contact you for advertising. In the meantime, you can join Internet advertising networks for som e revenue like Value Click, Ad Sense, Tribal Fusion, etc.

That should get you running. Other members may want to chime in and add their 2 cents.
