Omnipoint marketing?

Has anyone used this service? Is it just spam?

I got a call from an Omnipoint rep this morning trying to sell me email advertising.

Basic pitch was highly targetted "double opt-in subscriber list from Omnipoint's own network of sites" that would yield stupendous conversion rates.

He also claimed a large number of "name" companies were using their service (e.g. Microsoft).

Thinking about it, I came up with the following categories of email advertisements:

1. Email to people that have signed up for your list.
2. Advertisements on existing email newsletters that people have signed up for.
3. Direct email advertisements to people that have signed up for related newsletters, left contact information somewhere, or otherwise indicated that they are willing to receive information on certain topics.
4. Completely unsolicited email using addresses harvested through any number of means.

It sounds to me like they provide email in the third category, which is most likely one category below what I'm comfortable with.

But, I'm curious if anyone else has used them/run across them and had any commentary.

Thanks,

--Mike

I just got a call from Michael at Omnipoint marketing, who got my name off of Superpages and my number off my website. He was very determined to have me agree with him that what they do is NOT spam because "the people in their network have asked to receive the information." When I pointed out that the people had not asked to receive my information from ME, he said that people receiving my email would have requested info about what it is that I do. He glossed over the question essentially.

Personally, I think if you have to pay someone else to give you names to send emails to, you're pretty much spamming. Those people should sign up for your emails on your website ...

I've had three reps from Omnipoint call me in the last six months. I hung up on the last one b/c he wouldn't stop talking.

I think in today's climate, renting a list is a very tricky thing. Companies who had no knowledge of the fact that the lists they rented were spam have been sued. Companies whose affiliates of affiliates who sent email on their behalf are being sued.
