need help with os commerce

I need help desperatley.
as i was working on a freinds site i made some mistake that
caused the os commerce to stop displaying image links.
Im new to ecom and got lost ,didnt know what to do .
I was given an option to reset corrupt oscom database ,i did and now its back but with no formatting except the html pages.I used the wayback machine to find the old pages and my question is, if i copy the default.php file from the archiver by viewing source of a php page , can i edit that
in notepad save it as php again and upload it or is that futile.

Thanks Robino ,they had no backups except the html pages,
Im new to CSS as well and didnt realize it was controlling everythings appearance from the one stylesheet, ive only been using them for text so far.
I also tried using an editor i have called Easy Html, think i got it from tucows, i changed and uploaded one php then thought it best to go into the office and just use the oscom interface.
Back on track now,
