Think I would like to start by just making an order form secure which can be emailed. Will then enter the credit card orders by hand. Not sure how to do this.
Was looking at Mal's ecommerce. Do they do the secure form or does my full service host?
One reason I'm afraid to take the next step to a shopping cart is that shipping must be calculated from the zip code. Items we ship come in all size dimensions and weights. Some ship to business or to residential. Also, some customers don't know exact specs they need in a product to fit their job. We have a special order form for some of the products to fill in specifications.

Mals allows you to add HTML code to your site which passes the customer to Mals own servers, which is where the order is actually placed. The completed information is then sent to you. The contents of that form are quite customisable, but if you've got very complex shipping requirements, that may be a problem
Its sounds like you are ultimately looking to get quite a good ecomm package with a strong shipping element, or possibly an open source solution and a good developer (which would give you the advantage of total control of the code)
