click thru to product page and conversion rate

How does one improve click thru to product pages and conversion rate?

I've been working on an ecommerce site where there are categories with products in each category. Everything seems to work well, except that click through from the category pages to the product detail (and ordering) pages is low.

Does anyone know of any research or techniques for improving this product click thru, or how to figure out what might be "broken" in the content page?

The most important factor...tell the visitor what to do!

BIG and bold. Make it easy for them to complete the desired action (click here to view product details, click here to order, etc).

See this post [webmasterworld.com] about improving your conversion rate.

Make sure the search function is working properly. People usually search on my sites instead of drilling through categories. Remember, your customers don't know the products as well as you.

Make sure you have an 'add to shopping cart' button clearly visible on every product info page and product listing page.

Do you have too many categories? Maybe you don't have enough.

Are the products in the correct categories? You don't want "boots" in the "shoes" category.
