As a designer I dont understand much about modifying off-the-shelf store software. So...
Is it possible in Miva Merchant, when a customer has created an account, to display a "welcome" message when the customer logs on again later? Some sort of cookie placement?
Any help appreciated.

I'm not too sure about the specifics of Miva, but everything I've seen about it indicates that it's fairly easy to modify if you have, or can buy in, the skills. You may need to create a brand new page and insert it into the normal MV routines, but that really shouldn't be a challenge, IMO
