Yahoo! Store merchants today saw a new link on their login pages announcing the upcoming introduction of Yahoo! Merchant Solutions [store.yahoo.com].

Merchant Solutions is the "new Yahoo! Store", an ecommerce account that includes the "legacy" Yahoo! Editor, but adds to it a Hosting account, a Domains management tool, a set number of free Mail accounts, and additional tools for managing the Store data. One of the goals of Merchant Solutions is to encourage developers and merchants to build complex sites in an FTP hosting environment (e.g., using Dreamweaver) while using the Yahoo! Store database to manage product and order data.

Existing Yahoo! Stores will not be automatically migrated to Merchant Solutions. One reason is that the billing method is changing, but another is the pricing model is changing significantly, and the relationship of a Merchant Solutions account to Yahoo! Shopping differs significantly from that of Yahoo! Store to Shopping.

Speaking of which, a separate but related story is the upcoming revamping of Yahoo! Shopping, which is changing significantly, e.g., adopting a fairer ranking algorithm that uses mostly in-the-data criteria for relevancy determination.

Sounds like a list of interesting upgrades. For smaller ecomm sites, I could imagine this making Yahoo's offering look even more attractive as an easy way to 'get up & go' with their online store.
