member status

How does it work? What's it for? ---

By member status, I mean "new member", that's me, or "preferred member", what I'd like to be, and so on.

I see that its a useful feature of this forum complex, but nowhere have I been able to find an explination of its ins and outs.
How does status change?
Who or what determins a members status?

Is there a link somewhere to "all you ever wanted to know about webMasterWorld user status, but were afraid to ask", which I haven't yet found?
