very long monthly thread difficult to wade through

I would like to see 3 threads instead of one for the monthly update:
Thread #1: what most of the current postings are all about- where and when it is happening, what you see, www2,www3 etc.
Thread #2: observed and/or conjectured changes in the algorithm- might be titled "Algorithm changes DEC update"
Thread #3: "PR0 sites/penalties DEC update"

I think there are many like myself who do NOT want to follow the info in the above suggested thread #1 and also many who do not want to read about postings concerning the above suggested thread #3.

Yeah, splitting it up sounds great...too many pages to follow this way.

Do you guys not remember the mess of half a dozen largely duplicate threads going on at the same time?
Though I applaud the reasoning, there's too much excitement at the time, and the mods would be forever moving posts to try to keep a particular thread on topic.

Thread #4: "Discussing adding more Google threads" ;)

A good idea that deserves further discussion - the novelty of the monthly update thread wears thin pretty quickly :). Still, I guess everyone here has the right to post and read what they like!

An algo-based thread would be interesting but might be difficult for the mods to continually weed out all the 'my site got PR zero' etc. posts.

My 2c worth.

That's twice Nick, I'm tempted to start a "Is CSS a spammers best friend" thread.

There was also a request sometime back that the thread be split into three on the basis of update, positives and negatives.

I would say that split the discussion into the following :

1. Official Update - Let this be only as an announcement. Once the admins/mods confirm the update, they can lock the thread and should be allowed only for admins/mods to add any message futher and also as a bonus the poster who announces the update gets the chance to make further posts in this thread. Will be lazerzubb? :)

2. Positives from the update - Discussion around what are the algo changes that helped people to improve their rankings.

3. Negatives from the update - All the PR0/spam complaints go here

If this seems more work for the mods, Brett could get an additional mod just for the update threads ;) Just kidding.

Or for those who think this is asking for too less, what about a forum exclusively for Google Dance/ Updates? ;)

Once things calm down, any mind-blowing new discoveries are very likely to get their own threads pretty quickly. thayer's idea has good points, but the update thread carries the initial 'buzz' and to organise it would be quite a challenge when people are so excited.
