Forum Moderators: open
In saying that though, Im not really one for reading terms and conditions. ;)
Basically anything bad that relates to spefic sites / companies goes. This has to do with possible liablous material being printed on the site.
Anything to do with politics / religion / etc as well treads on a thin line.
This is a multicultural forum, so what may be a passing comment to you or I, may be deeply offensive to someone else at the other side of the world.
Its tough, but i think the mods tend to air caution more often than not to be on the safe side.
Most be hard jobs, mods! :) Hope you all get plenty of PR8 links for it! ;)
JOAT
I always like to put myself in someone else's position in order to understand the situation better. If we don't moderate carefully there may be various repercussions that reverberate in many ways.
Once in a while we have to make tough decisions - always with the benefit of board in mind.
All that without reading the TOS? ;)
Done it a lot myself - i know how difficult it is to keep things amicable when the heated debate arises (and there are a lot of topics that fall into that category in this industry!).
JOAT :)
JOAT, it happens to be my favorite thing to do, out of everything. It's hard sometimes, but I wouldn't trade it for the world, I love it. Good idea about the high PR link. I'll have to get a site review <evil grin> and redesign and see about getting one when I'm ready. ;)
>>Is there an editorial decision on which posts stay or go?
It's not always clear to the member in question, a few of whom think they're right no matter what - thankfully very, very few. But the editorial decisions are always based on the foundation of the TOS.
>>If it encourages Profile viewing (two-click URL dropping) does it get erased?
Profile Spamming! That's the one thing I love to hate the most. It's when people deliberately post to try to get their profile URL clicked on, and not always for innocent reasons. Occasionally it's blatant, sometimes innocent, more often done with subtlety - but there's never been one I haven't been able to spot. If there's any sign-up or sales type area in plain view, it's a no-brainer. What's done depends on the situation, it's hard to say.
Self promotional URL drops and whisper campaigns are strictly forbidden within the forums and will be edited out.
Two-click is right on, it's only one step away. IMHO it's a way of getting around the rules in a grey area, but no less promotional in their intention. Not my favorite thing to put it mildly, and contrary to the spirit of the board.
Actually, according to the Terms of Service, we have a policy of not discussing moderating issues or actions publicly in threads - at all, whatsoever:
Discussions about moderator or administrator actions are welcome in email or local private messages, but should not be discussed in public forums. This is out of respect for the members and moderators or policy involved.
To clarify one thing, sometimes it may not be due to the original post, it can be that a thread goes south downstream. Whatever's done is according to TOS and with the best interests of the membership and the board in mind.
Getting into discussions about it invariably turns into something less than positivie and beneficial, so actually, what I'll do is close this thread to further posts now, to make sure it stays informative and pleasant. All of us always welcome member questions if there are any about mod actions, and provision is made to do that privately with regular email and/or stickymail.
sun818, stickymail me where your thread was and what the title was and I'll check it out and get back to you by stickymail. You're a good member for quite a while, it's probably more than possible that it was just moved to another location.
