Message Too Old, No Replies

"Check your sticky mail", "Just send you a sticky mail"

Do we really need those posts.

In quite a few threads I have seen those kinds of posts.

To me it seems that they are unneccessary. The person who got the sticky mail will see it at the top of the screen or she will be notified by email when email notification is enabled. To any other reader those posts are not very useful.

IMO people should refrain from posting such messages.

In defense of such posts, other members may be interested in the same info. If a member sends link or code snippet via sticky to someone, a post to that effect alerts other members that the info is available.

There have been many instances where newer members have either overlooked or procrastinated in checking their stickymail. They sometimes need a heads-up. When a thread involves more experienced members, there's a nuisance factor, imo.

Rogerd makes a good point. Sometimes the member "has an answer" but knows that posting it will involve an url drop or subject matter that the board doesn't want posted publicly.

If the info is of general interest then one should consider posting it instead if using sticky mail. Iīm aware that with certain links that might not be possible but there were threads were there was a nice discussion on some programming problem and the final solution was only available by sticky mail.

People were afraid to break Brettīs "no code posting" rule. However, this rule was never intended to prevent those kinds of posts after a fruitful discussion.

Maybe the person should send the other person a Sticky Mail to let them know they have a Sticky Mail ;)

Personally I think that stickymail is annoying itself. Having to type messages to each other in this browser box seems so silly. I have a mail client with tons of functionality set up just like I like it, but I have to use an interface unique to WebmasterWorld to communicate with its members. Ebay at least sends the message to me in email so that I can reply if I so desire. I'd like to be able to check some kind of box to get rid of stickymail somehow.

I tend to agree andreas that it is neccessary some times, but it tends to be over used.

Hey andreas,

Check your sticky mail ;)

Seriously though. The 'new member' point is a damn good call.

amoore, the stickymail is a feature that some feel offers them privacy. Those who want to can put their web site URL in their profile and their email can be found through it. That choice is available for those who want to use it.

I think Andrew has a good point there.

How about an email to stickymail gateway? ;)

In our busy lives....some of us forget to check to see if there "is" any sticky mail. I have at times - to be surprised there were 2 or 3 messages from days back. The little minder to "check" seems harmless enough when a good discussion needs further private conversation.

Sticky-to-email or Email-to-stick is a great way to spam. Happens all the time on eBay.

I've missed the little "unread" number a few times myself. Obviously, the mail reminder eventually prompts me, but sometimes I check WebmasterWorld from a workstation that doesn't check my POP mail. Brett, I think a nice, big popup saying "You Have StickyMail!" would be just the ticket... maybe you could even get a sponsor, like X*10 or Orb*tz. Some animated GIFs would make sure nobody missed it. ;)

I don't think the system needs to be changed. Sun818 has a very good point.

I don't much like those "check sticky" posts either but have had to use them a few times for newer members that don't know about stickymail yet. I dislike them when they detract from a good conversation.

I've rarely seen a thread where those posts became so frequent as to disrupt the easy comprehension of the main discussion...

The best advice anyone ever gave me about dealing with minor annoyances was, "Ignore it." (OK, that was actually advice on how to deal with kids at school making fun of me, but it works for garbage posts too... hehehe)

Any chance of a thread "sticky function" so that all participants in a thread discussion can be send the same stickymail "once".

Or does this open the doors of "abuse"... again.
