I just want to thank all of you out there that have posted your questions and the great answers. I happened upon webmasterworld quite by accident but what a good thing it was. Sure wish I would have known you were here when i first put my website up about 2 months ago. Well done to you all. I'm sure I'll give all of you plenty of headaches with my questions in the future - for now I have log after log to read. CHEERS

Consider yourself lucky. I have been designing web sites for seven years. I have about 30 client sites in my CURRENT arsenal and I didn't bump into webmasters world until last week, and wo! Have I been missing out. I now have a hell of allot of work to do to bringing these sites up to snuff. Because they aren't even close.

Being at first a completely graphics orientated person with html code as my only friend hasn't helped much. Never could get javascript under my belt. Never found a good asp/cgi tutorial I had time for or development software form. And, jeeze it seems like all you guys seem to be using PHP and Unix which I had thought was the underdog in the codeing/platform. boy was I 180 degrees off tilt. (You have to see my graphics though) Always sort of did everything my own way and have ended up with ASP/Access/WindowsNT sites among pure and simple old fashioned HTML. Anyway, this is truly like striking gold. Sort of a sense of finally finding home. I know that these forums have people who actually know what they're talking about in them and for that I am elated.

I've noticed there isn't allot of hosting discussions going on here as to which hosting environments can be trusted and which are 5 minute start ups. I'm assuming this is because the topic has become taboo? or is to prone to self promotion? Though its hard to find any information you can trust on the subject.. so its abit of a catch 22. Just thought I'd mention it. I'm sure I will find the exact right host some day.

On the mend.

Welcome to WebmasterWorld, Toronto.

You're right about why we tend to avoid hosting discussions; it's best for everyone if the board is kept supportive and educational rather than move to any type of commercialism. We all find that it stays a relaxing, comfortable environment that way.

>On the mend.

You'll be up to speed in no time, you'll be surprised. And then you'll really have an edge in the field. A talented designer/graphic artist who learns to design sites to be search engine friendly from the ground up is way ahead of the game. It's also much easier to do, in the long run.

Thanks for posting, it's good to have you here with us.

Welcome Toronto (I assume an Ontario resident, or maybe for the Leafs, Bluejays, or Rapters) to WebmasterWorld.

From a fellow Canadian, former Ontarian (now just a poor cousin in Nova Scotia)! ;)

Welcome to WebmasterWorld Toronto

A lot of us here use ASP. Linux is usually more prevalent by hosts these days. I am glad to see another graphic designer in the house. Please stop by or graphics forum [webmasterworld.com]. You may also want to take a look at our ASP forum [webmasterworld.com] also.

Here are some hosting threads to help you.

Thank you for the warm welcome Marcia, fathom, lorax, korkus2000. Again, even these posts have been immensely useful. I'm admiring the inner workings of the WebMasterWorld control panel, and the great discussions in the graphics/asp forum. With a good hard look at the statistics of some of our key sites and some much needed robots.txt implementation I'm already starting to feel not so off base. 179 degrees now

Cheers to the web and the construction of a new communication system I'm sure will topple our dug in constructs and concepts many times. Hopefully.

Oh yes I'm a poor Torontonian {hence the name} with relatives from beautiful Nova Scotia I would give anything to wake up to that coast each morn. Though I don't follow the major sports my hearts with our Curling/Biking Team{s}. Their are so many.
