Forum Moderators: open
I have to admit that I just jumped right in with a URL drop and a question. Perhaps I should have read the rules first.
But people where very understanding and just advised me that I should ask specific questions and that way I would get a lot more from webmasterworld, They where right.
:)
- search engine ranking
- Search Engine Optimization
But I am nearly sure I spelled "Optimalisation".
I am still amazed that, with the best quality, WebmasterWorld does not come up higher for these queries.
(No offense, but in Dutch there is an expression, "At a carpenters home, all the wood-work is slanted";))
Ended up in a smaller forum of another SEO site. Got side-tracked to this forum. Was a bit scared (intimidated?) by the size/importance/authority in the beginning, but with the addiction came the need for constant new quality Messages, hence part of the staying power for me.
Therefor starting up this new "New To Web Development" [webmasterworld.com...] is a great idea for attracting and keeping newbies.

I ran across this website several times and each time I said, "Nah, it's a forum. Forums are only filled with junk, spam, and flames. They can't be authoritative." I left without reading a single article, and I focused on finding authoritative sites with fixed content.
I went through a lot of those sites, and I found that several good sites recommended this site. I decided to read a few current threads. 15 mins later, I was hooked. [talk about sticky websites]
I should have started reading WebmasterWorld the first time. :)
We've even been found in a Swedish forest!
Quote from rencke, one of our cornerstone originals, who I will always love dearly:
Welcome visitors from Svenska Dagbladet's famous moose hunting page. In case you wonder what this is all about and where you have landed, here is a short explanation.WebmasterWorld is a disussion forum for Webmasters, with particular emphasis on the art of SEO, Search Engine Optimization. SEO means to make sure that a website is appealing not only to its visitors, but also to the search engine spiders. If they can't make any sense of it, the site will not be indexed or will end up so far back in search replies that no one will ever find it.
[webmasterworld.com...]
We all find our way here different ways, but why do we stay? Why is it different here? See what people were saying about that in a thread about that from September, 2000:
[webmasterworld.com...]
My very first post ever at WebmasterWorld was in that thread. Is it the same now? Have we changed since then?
I've thought about it and I can't figure it out, I think it must be the user base, then I think the variety of questions/answers, then I think it could be the skill/knowledge of the people on the board.....
It's got to be all of it.
But I know the boards are addictive.
What does everyone else think?
I think its all the friendly people here.
Where could we get this help we can have here??
Its not not about same things alltime it is a huge knowlegde over everything that haves with internet to do, and people from the hole world.
A greate example to a post that have nothing to do with internet and SE´S Backus told us that he is going to get married you dont tell that to people you dont like.
I think most of us hanging around with the people at wmw more than with our friends at home.
This is a greate place for studing and relax in the foo area.
Another thing is iam going to get married 16/6-june about a week. We have lived together for 12 years now and have 3 kids all boys so when the little boy will have his name we will get married at the same time.
Keep up the work all members and moderators and a big thanks to Brett he is doing a grate work!!!

I always lurk first. I read this thread at probably 5:15 am EST and am just now replying.
I was one of the moderators of a compuserve support forum for a major laptop manufacturer for quite a while, so I am not new to forums.
I found these and other forums through google as I have been in business for a long time - though new to web based business. I found this forum to be the most user-friendly and informative. Now I just lurk here and and the DMOZ forum :)
And yes....no one else cares if you drop into a conversation that"Googs is dancing".....so I found out down the pub one night.....the rest of the world just doesnt understand.
It's been a great experience, it has allowed me to vent when I needed to, ask questions when I don't know, give advice when I do know and have fun being a part something where I share common interests with others.
It's actually great therapy, I've gotten rid of my psychiatrist...hehe (Just joking about the psychiatrist although some think I need one!) :)
garry, the first time I ever came across a board on search engines I thought to myself "Those people are crazy! They LIVE at the search engines; I would never do that." Well... one accidental ranking, try to figure out how it happened, and you're hooked.
I stay because I love it here. backus, let me tell you a little story. When my brother and I were very little, while we were waiting on line in a dry cleaning store in Brooklyn, NY some woman picked up her hand to hit my brother. My mother, who was 5'1", hauled off and sent the big mummser flying right through the storefront window out onto the street.
That is how I am about WmW. That is the only reason Brett puts up with me. And trust me, I am not easy to put up with.
My reason for staying can be summed up by the words of a children's nursery school song that goes like this:
If you're happy and you know it, clap your hands.
(Clap, clap)
If you're happy and you know it, clap your hands.
{Clap, clap)If you're happy and you know it,
Then your face will surely show it.
If you're happy and you know it, clap your hands.
(CLAP, CLAP)
I have stayed because I am happy here!
