Suggestions for StickyMail Visibility

Many new users overlook the stickymail link, and may miss messages.

Suggestions:
Change the color of "You have mail: [###]" or
just change the color of "[###]"

Bright red, or another color contrasting the current color scheme, would stand out indicating something new, and to check it out.

Nothing would stand out, unless they actually had messages.

Make it stand out only if they have unread messages.

A small animated gif works well too. Perhaps a mail icon that bounces back and forth a couple times, then stops so that it doesnt get really annoying.

why not display the link in another color "red" and in bold... or perhaps have a stickymail popup window when a user has mail.

I liked it best with just the number in red with larger font. Serves the purpose without being too intrusive.

How about a little dog that jumps up from behind the WMW logo, runs across the screen, then barks 'new mail, new mail', then runs away again. That should be easy to do shouldn't it?? :)

Make email notification of StickyMail messages "on" by default? That way, when a new user received their first StickyMail, they'd be notified at their profile email... and there could be a link at the bottom of the notification message: "To turn off email notification, visit this link: [...."...] that would send them to the SitckyMail preferences page... (make a valid email address required for registration)

A limited time animated gif (like ggrot mentioned) would also be good... set to maybe three repetitions of the animation. That way, peraps the movement would catch their eye when they loaded a page, but then stop.

With the current setup, doing a "you have xx NEW" mail would be very resource intensive. It would require another full parse of the users mail box.

That red should catch the newer user's eyes. I know there will be a long period of adjustment for us older members. It also should help remind the older members to keep their StickyMail box as low as they can tolerate.

The rest of the story here is that I have had StickyMail v2.0 almost done for six months. Just a question of finding the time. The last six months have been a case of one top priority trumping another top priority on a daily basis.

Moving the 3 I was keeping to a "hold" folder cleared the red.

I never had any problems with the old system, but by heck lad that red in bold font size 2, don't have catch my attention, i actually read and delete, so it goes away.

It does, the job, and you are right Brett, it will take some time getting used to, as it sort off destroys, the visual integrity of the site, but if everybody is happy with the change, then who am i too complain.
