Hi

I just noticed the recent / active posts page now has all the links to active threads as target="blank", which mean they open in a new window.

Any chance this behavior can be restricted to the little icon to the left of each link? I hate it when web sites spawn new windows without good reason.

It only does that if you specify it in the control panel preferences. ;)

Go to:

[webmasterworld.com...]

Set "Open Links New Window" to No. :)

Maybe that's true now, but either this behaviour is new, or my preferences were reset without me being involved...

My system preferences are (and have always been) to set "open in new window" to "no", yet I'm getting threads from the Recent Posts lists opening in a new window.

This is really terrible behavior. Best to drop it entirely, or failing that at least change it to observe the preference set by the user. The last thing I need is more windows (in a tabbed browser).

Hmm, well I didn't know about this setting, and certainly hadn't changed it either. Maybe the WW server got hit by a little cosmic radiation and a few bits got flipped?

Anyway, changed the setting and the previous behavior is restored.

Thanks for the feedback.

Hmm. Not doing it for me.

zCat, please fill out a Bug report [webmasterworld.com] so it gets flagged to Brett's attention. That way he can have more details from you.

Thanks.

I am having the same problem here. Have changed my account settings and am still spawning new windows (or tabs in this case).

Very frustrating.

Bug report submitted.

<edit>Found another setting - "Active Posts Preference" or some such thing. Got it fixed now. Someone must have reset these settings in the past day or two, since it wasn't me!</edit>

Same problem here. I have never opened the 'Active List Preferences' panel before today. When I logged into WebmasterWorld this morning all threads were opening in new windows. Also, they were showing the name of the member that started each thread - which I have never seen before. After reading this thread I reset both preferences in Control Panel and all is well now. Using Firefox on Win XP, if that helps.

I am pleased this thread is here as I thought it was a new bug. Will try the solution offered above but this only started today.

Added.

I just made the change and now all is back to normal. I first started having problems when the OP members names were added to the subject lines. Anyway got rid of them and all is well. Phew....

I noticed this happening on Saturday night.

I hadn't edited my system preferences for about a year or more. The setting for "Open Links in New Window" was set to No. (I didn't know there was such a setting)

I expected that this setting would apply to links within posts. And, after testing what happens when I switch this back and forth:
- Links from Active Post List page still open in a new window.
- Links within posts to other sites open according to this setting.

According to the boss, some minor code tweaking and a reset is apparently what caused the switch.

Just go into the control panel and reset your preferences. :)
