These FWIWs are about features that used to work like clockwork for me and now either work erratically or not at all, sorry.

POINTERS

Problem: Sub-forums' "red dots" inconsistent

Details: For the last couple of days I've noticed that the red dot "new" pointers to the left of individual Forum's "Sub-Message Boards" have been coming and going independent of my resetting topic, sub-forum, forum, and all-forum pointers

For example, "The Webmaster World" is busy forum, ditto its "Content, Writing and Copyright" sub-board. But upon visiting that forum after a few days, the CWC showed no red dot. Surprised, I clicked it open and found loads of red dotted new or newly replied-to messages. Similarly, last week "The Search Engine World" forum's "robots.txt" sub-board didn't have a red dot despite having red-dotted messages inside.

(If that makes sense, so will this: I've only seen no-dots with messages, not dots without messages.)

I've tried logging out and in to WW, resetting everything, emptying my cache, quitting and restarting my browser, etc., all to no avail.

REPLY MAIL

Problem: Notification of replies to posts AWOL

Details: The last time I received a "Reply Post Notification" was some weeks back, despite having posted replied-to posts/replies since then, and always checking the "Do you want an email notification of replies?" box. This problem was talked about here [webmasterworld.com] but apparently that thread's closed now (?; no reply link) so I'm just mentioning that it's still a problem, at least for me.

The no-reply result is the same whether I Preview a post/reply or Submit the first time.

As a workaround, I've started checking for replies to threads via the Control Panel where, by the way, the red dots appear to be A-OK.

NEW POST MAIL

Problem: Notification of new discussions AWOL

Details: Sorry but I can't remember how long it's been since I received a "New Discussion Notification" re the three forum sub-boards I've selected -- possibly two weeks to a month or more? So I got in the habit of 'checking the red dots.' But now that those are inconsistent, ditto reply notification e-mails, visiting the site is noticeably less efficient and less enjoyable, alas.

Still A-OK: "[Local Email] E-Mail Notification" and Sticky forwards, etc.

Here's hoping the above info helps!

.

Thank you for the URL.

Aw, shoot. Do I now have to file three separate bug reports? Oh, well. Will do. Thanks again.

(Also, thank you, Hawkgirl, for giving me a clue:)

for the new post notifications it was mentioned that the way to fix it was to go into your control panel, unselect all forum notifications and submit.

Then go back, add them again and submit.

that has fixed it for the members I have spoken to.

jatar_k, thanks for the tip! After you offered it, I unchecked my three selections and submitted the 'blank' list. Then (re)selected my original three plus added a fourth to see if that might help kick-start things. Alas, nope. No notifications despite new posts in all areas. Well, perhaps whatever changed along the way will change back one of these days.

I'd just like to add my name to the list of those whose email notification has switched off, seemingly never to return.

Suggested solution above did not fix it :-(

I sent in a bug report about a week ago about not getting email notifications anymore. I also tried the solutions in this thread. Is there going to be a resolution to this problem sometime soon?

Have you tried sending in a bug report about the ineffectiveness of the bug report?

We know about the problem and are not sure when it will be fixed. You'll be notified ... ;)

While many of our notifications remain AWOL (& my red dots keep coming and going, so half the time I feel like I'm browsing kinda blind), I just wanted to repeat a very nifty way of checking on replies to posts, one which I'd not used before. It's:

Control Panel > Your Active Threads

Go there and you'll see which of your posts/threads have replies, plus you'll be able to access those posts' forums, all in one swell foop. The only inconvenient part is that you're on your own when it comes to remembering to check back:)

I don't know how admins keep up with their personal volumes of posts, particularly if they post a lot across a number of forums. But if you're like me and you post a few times here and there, an "Active Threads" bookmark is a genuine time-saver.

Thanks for the tip, Pfui.

The notifications are broken and the programming problem is not apparent. I'll let everyone know when they are fixed.

And when you're busy that's the real trick ;)

George Costanza? Who he?

Now that we are back it means that half my day will be spent on WW again ;) I noticed that I seemed to have much more time to do things while the notifications were down ;)

Does overall traffic and postings through WW drop considerably when this happens?

George Costanza? Who he?

Seinfeld [en.wikipedia.org]

George Costanza [en.wikipedia.org]

Duckman [en.wikipedia.org]

What he originally said was, "I'm Back Baby!"

I guess I am supposed to post this here. Here is a copy & paste of my previous post:

"For some reason, I am not receiving email notification of replies. I checked my email to be sure it works, and it does. Is there anything simple I am missing that I am supposed to do? (I have been clicking on "Do you want an email notification of replies?" at the bottom of each post.)"

Any ideas?

Doucette, your 'moved' post was originally dated March 4. I started getting e-mail notifications galore again -- of replies to posts, of new posts in watched areas -- on March 9. Are yours still AWOL?

(Here's hoping you'll get e-notification of this reply and discover that the programming snafu fixes work for you, too:)

I just received an email notification to this thread (and one before it to another thread) just today! :)

I hope that means whatever was wrong is fixed. Thanks!

Hmm... now is there any way to make that email notification checkbox checked by default?

Hi bugfixers,

I think you might want to take another look. I am getting reply notifications--thanks!--but the subject line seems consistently to be the title of the last thread I replied in (I think), and not necessarily the title of the thread that the notification is for.
