Things to do in Vegas

What else is there to do in Vegas next week besides gamble and drink when I'm supposed to be attending sessions? I'm in a day early so I thought it might be nice to do something different.

I've been to the Grand Canyon which I think is drivable, but it's been a long time. Might be worth another look.

The hoover dam sounds very cool but my understanding is that you can't get the full tour anymore.

Any other ideas?

you said it was a long time since you went the grand canyon - last year we took a flight out there in a light aircraft, landing on the ridge and jumping into a helicopter to decend into the valley - well worth the $200 (or thereabouts)

Just going for a walk in the evening, once they turn the lights on, can be fun. I'm in awe of the excess of Vegas, and the pretense that the excess actually matters, if that makes any sense.

If anyone has a decent cigar source I'd be grateful if you pack away an extra cigar or two, for which I'd be most willing to reimburse the cost. Sometimes just kicking back with a group, smoking a cigar, drink in hand and shooting the breeze - war stories, jokes, making fun of ourselves - is the best time of all.

Then again, Buckwheat Zydeco, in New Orleans, was a pretty good tune-up for the soul. Plus a few nice dinners out.

Ummmm . . . so many possibilities, so little time. :)

The Canyon tours are really cool, they pick you up at the hotel, fly over to the canyon by way of the Hoover Dam, drop in on a helicopter, take a little boat ride in the Colorado, back out on the copter, hop on a bus, get lunch at the Indian reservation, back on the bus, back on the plane to Vegas, and then hotel drop off. It's a full day.

Oh, yes, Valley of Fire is spectacular. Especially as the sun sets.

Try "Mystere" at Treasue Island. As far as I'm concerned, the best Cirque show ever (and, I've seen most of them, except for the adult show in Vegas).

Also, I think Blue Man Group is out there somewhere. I will be checking that one out. I've seen three of their shows and they ROCK!

One more thing. The drive to the Grand Canyon is very long.

Take an airplane ride or the helicopter tour to save a buttload of time. I've done both and the drive sucks. Especially to the north side? It took forever and there wasn't any cell phone service in case of an emergency. Just miles and miles and miles of dessert.

Plus, the south side is so much more colorful. But they both take a long time to drive to.

($99) Avenue Q is at the Wynn and it's hilarious. It's also rumoured to be in trouble and may not be at the Wynn much longer. Highly recommended. Full puppet nudity.

($8 for a cocktail) Don't do the patio/waterfall show at the Wynn. It's stupid. You have to have drink on the terrace to see it and it's not that big a deal. It's just plain goofy.

($100 +)Blue Man Group is at the Venetian.

(Free) Fat Elvis plays in the afternoons at the Barbary Coast. He is Fat and he may be Elvis. And he really is known as Fat Elvis. He claims he's Elvis' love child.

(Free) Sirens of TI - they replaced the pirate show with a very campy one. I think the girls lip sync. It's very silly. Every 90 minutes in the evening outside Treasure Island.

I'm new on here and don't know any of you but what better way to start then on the trip next week. Thought maybe it would be a good idea for the folks from the forum who are going to Vegas to meet up for a night out and get to know one another.

Tip: don't wear trousers to eat, i recommend sweat pants ;)

Taking a helicopter tour into the Grand Canyon is a quick way to get there - I seem to remember it was about $500 per person, but well worth the money.

It only took a few minutes outside Vegas until we were running the canyon walls, then eventually landed in the canyon on an Indian reservation for wine, beer and snacks. After that, you're off again, running through some more canyon walls then eventually taking a tour of the strip from the air before returning to the airport.
