I am sure it happened to you.
Reading a post and not having a comment yet.
But wanting to be kept posted on thread progress.

Could it be a nice forum addition?
Capability to receive notification without posting a couple of useless sentences.

I have often thought about this myself Henry and as you say it would be a worthwhile addition.

Having such a feature would save me typing a single word or "?" just to get into the thread ;)

There is the flagging option of course.

Isnt that what the flag text link at the bottom of the page is for?

You then goto your control panel and it says "Flagged Threads".

Angelis, in the CP people tend to check "My Threads" more often than "My Flags".

Yes, I think it'd be great. Sort or like "Subscribed Threads" feature in vBulletin.

Signing up for thread notification would be a great option, but it would be even better when it is combined with an unsubscribe button. The type of button you need for those Google update threads for example where after a few hundred posts the subject of the posts changes and the thread becomes less interesting, but the notification messages keep filling your inbox.

I agree Lammert. It would be good to have an opt in/opt out for thread notifications, much better than flags, which you have to remember to check.

I second Lammert
an opt in/out combo should add a nice touch to the forum.

I can imagine why Brett is hesitating adding an optin/out function for thread post notifications. Most threads have tens of posters which results in tens of notification emails for each new post. With an opt-in functionality interesting threads can easily have hundreds or thousands of interested readers resulting in a flood of emails sent out with every new post. This could have some impact on server load.

Good point
but w/out statistics..
Although your concern makes sense.

If limited to members only do you think that numbers could be that high?

Brett some time back mentioned that WW gets 7 digits pageviews per day. I have no idea however which percentage of this traffic is generated by registered members.

> optin/out function for thread post notifications

Might be in the software, but not enabled. I don't believe the feature is community friendly. It is for members to lurk further and participate less.
