WebmasterWorld BestBBS software updated to version 3.33

This was a long over due major under the hood internal update.

Changes:

  • updated entire member file structure to allow for major expansion of member base.
  • Active members slot increased from 50,000 to over 180,000 registered 2005 members.
  • Directories were stripped from bulk 50k files to less than 4k per directory.
  • Stickymail was broken down by member name instead of group.
  • Speed of thread generation was increased by an estimated 200%

The largest benefits:
- massive increase in number of available live online registered members database.
This eliminates the need for such aggressive member file weeding that we have done in the past.
Member file retention times will be increased up to six months now.

- member names are no longer case sensitive. :-)

- speed. You should notice a significant speed increase in the overall operation of the site.

Congrats Brett. Any known bugs yet? A thread [webmasterworld.com] I've posted in is not showing up in "My Threads" and doesn't have the yellow triangle in my "recent Posts" listing. Just thought you may want to know.

Next question: When is BestBBS available for purchase? :)

I didn't think the site could get any faster - but it has! Great job, as always!

I'm definitely noticing the speed increase.

Great job BT - WW was always damn fast for a forum of it's scale anyway.

Lovely work. Under-the-hood work is always the toughest to pull off. Most folks don't notice the changes until they're either pointed out or something goes wrong. It's the bane of the work we often must do. Great job and thanks!

Good Job! no page stalls and noticed the speed/fetch improvement (thought you upgraded the server).

Brett,
what does it take to run this...hardware-wise? It's amazing I've never seen a slowdown in this board.
Is it top-secret :)?

Don't tell anyone but Brett took a leaf out of Google's book. He's got several dozen 386s.

just a single PC. Runs under *nix, winders, or mac...whatever will run Perl (duck tape of the internet).

Compare that to (at last report) 6 dedicated boxes that /. is running (and believe we do more pv's a day than they do. At last report, they had fallen back below a half mil a day pv's).

Just noticed the name of this thread:

WebmasterWorlds' BestBSS updated to v3.33

I thought it was a "BBS" not a "BSS"

...since I hope to license a copy someday, I really hope it ain't "BS"...<grin>

I'll asnwer this:

Brett planned on doing this already, but the site got very busy, and the time and effort is going to keep this site up and running. How close am I Brett? :)

Since lexipixel brought it up, I'll throw in my .02 about the title:

It should be "WebmasterWorld's" not "WebmasterWorlds'".

You are implying possession of the BestBBS to WebmasterWorld, not WebmasterWorlds.

yes, that was the orginal intent - but, we are flexible :-)

> How close am I Brett?

correct.

If a worker leaves the new york train station headed west at 8 hours per day. What will happen in one years time, if you add 1 minute per day of management time to his schedule?

You fall in the ocean.

BT, I assume you sleep? There's your first mistake. In order to get everything done, you must be awake!

Quite a difference. Must have been some pretty significant changes made under the hood.

Not so grass hopper. If the avg human walks at an avg of 3 miles per hour (24miles a day) - he will not even make it to the Mississippi river ;-) as those management hrs build up (the dead time), he will slow down to 2, then 1mph, and finally after about 1.4 years, he will not even move. ;-)

"Not so grass hopper."

Bah, your mention of the train station made me imply that the person was travelling via rail.

sorry Namaste - not yet.. you know my first love is programming, but my responsibilities and duties to the site these days yank me in the direction of management.
