I signed up in 2003, and have been lurking so long that I have forgotten my login name, (so I signed up again).
In my time here I have followed 70% of the basic advice handed out... and time permitting, I will follow the other 30%.
I'm now on page 1 on G and MSN for all my prefered key phrases. The result has been that my traffic has increased 10 fold from last summer to this winter, and as my industry is seasonal, I expect to see this traffic increase many times over the next few months.
If any newbies are reading this, my message is to stick with it, build content, build links, and you will get there in the end. The standard advice given here really does work.
Hopefully you'll be able to contribute a bit too, you get a lot from doing so. Something I believe is that teaching things reinforces them to a high degree in the teacher.
Also, another note to newbies - try to focus on intelligent posts that contribute to the topic and remember that often times something that seems really important to say to YOU might not really be appropriate to the discussion and might cause people who would otherwise be about to post some great information to get frustrated and say 'to hell w'it'. :-)
BT - start a forum that's just for "Help, my site just tanked in Google!" ;-)
