Forum Moderators: open

Message Too Old, No Replies

Getting sick of hearing "I've probably posted this in the wrong place"

I need to vent.

I'm getting tired of people saying "I've probably posted this in the wrong place" because if you say that, you are probably right. Why don't you take a few minutes and look around for somewhere appropriate?

Are you sure this thread shouldn't be in Foo?

;)

Seriously, it seems to happen often when someone knows a particular forum is premoderated and think it will be quicker to put the question elsewhare, look all innocent and get it moved across - it also means that the thread can't be rejected.

It happens also when people who can't be bothered to read all the forum names, or because it genuinely is a newbie poster who has no clue what any of the forum titles mean.

Perhaps the first kind should be told to resubmit their question to the right forum and have the thread locked. The second kind can't be bothered reading all the threads so don't last long before leaving never to return, and the third group will hopefully learn from the answers given.

Haha, I ALMOST posted this in Foo, but this forum raises questions about how the site operates, so I put it here.

Well, my point, unless it's a true newbie (less than 10 posts) a person should know better.

I like your idea about locking the thread and advising the person to post elsewhere.

Hey Brett, scratch those guys off the "candidate for mod" list! ;) I don't know what you guys are bellyachin' about. WE gotta move 'em! And then politely inform the poster... Didja ever try to be friendly and polite when you feel like killin' sumpthin'? ;) :)

"Let me make one thing perfectly clear!" ALL of the above is said in jest. It is intended to be humorous!

quicker to put the question elsewhare
Called a premod dodge, been there, tired of doing it

it also means that the thread can't be rejected.
Not so fast. We try to remember to put threads on hold when they are moved to a premodded forum, if they get moved instead of deleted.

Why don't you take a few minutes and look around for somewhere appropriate?
I think we'd all prefer this. Forum newbies are often buried. Newbies to this board are often buried. And there will always be inconsiderate members...

Unfortunately, it's just the nature of a forum. If you stick around long enough, it'll cease to annoy you. At least that's what they tell me! ;)

Maybe one thing that could help for newbie members is a different "new post icon" (eventually - I know Brett's got a ton of stuff on his plate).

If the new post icon for a newbie (first to 12th or 15th post maybe?) was, say, yellow instead of red, that should help us all note it so we can welcome the person; and would perhaps help some of us be a tad bit more tolerant (and yes, I AM including myself in that! - Ted's supposed to remind me to have a glass of wine before posting on Fridays! - but he's buried too, so I just set up a popup PostItNote that's always on top, to be sure I get AND remember the point....)

I agree with Dave here. If this has to annoy someone - it's gotta be the mods - who handle it very well and move it where it belongs.

I may be missing something here, but I can't see how and why this would upset a normal member. But I guess it would save time for the moderators if people spend a minute or two looking for the right forum to post in, even if it means it is pre-moderated (usually, pre-moderated forums get more traffic - so there's another advantage).

It annoys me because it's usually off the topic of the forum, and they admit it is.

I'm too much of an order freak. :) it's like putting a post-it saying "I don't think this is the right spot" on a file that should go in "A" but instead is in "Q" because someone didn't want to open the other drawer to look for the right spot.

Oh well... Life goes on, and I always answer the thread politely and suggest a better forum for it.

I just happened to see one to many yesterday.

Not to disagree with Mike's point that there are many careless posters... there are some subjects that aren't easily classified, even for the most knowledgeable and careful board users among us.

And, if you're a newbie, or simply not an expert in a particular area, you may not have enough knowledge to know where the question might be most appropriate.

Good point Robert. The staff frequently debates where a post should ultimately reside, sometimes at length.

I agree with Robert - there are some topics, say, that show up in one of the webmaster forums and could easily fit in two or three forums depending on who looked at the content. What could be a professional webmaster topic could be an e-commerce or scripting or PPC topic.
