Hello Gals and Guys. Well, the honeymoon is definitely over. I've been at the same spot for nearly a year, doing mostly the same thing - developing and promoting a few little web sites. And, in my opinion, doing a decent job for someone relatively new to the scene.

But my worth and worthiness have been called into question and quite frankly I'm still peeved. Had this been a regular job I would have been on the phone with a couple of recruiters and off to work next week with someone new and a raise to boot! But no, this is no regular job. I've volunteered my services 100% - there's a lot of freedom in this sort of arrangement. So it really came as a blow to discover it's all for naught.

Anyway, things have smoothed out some, and I "get to resume my previous duties"... Problem is, now it feels like a job and since I'm not getting paid I really want no part of it. My philosophy is that if it isn't any fun then don't do it. What I've done today was no fun... tomorrow promises nothing resembling fun (or perhaps I'm just being too pessimistic).

Soon I plan to put together all the documentation and user information available for the projects I've done. All of those projects will be wrapped up. I don't want someone else coming behind me and badmouthing my work. I figure if things move at their current rate then by November I'll be back in Atlanta, and this gig will have run its final course. It could just as easily end tomorrow.

So.... in a way this may be goodbye. The last day could be any day and could arrive quite without warning - tho I'm hoping and praying that any departure is actually scheduled and planned. And I couldn't say goodbye without saying Thanks! to all of you. Brett, you have earned a place somewhere bud.. for the most comprehensive and authoritative web site about web sites that anyone has ever put together. Your team of Admins and Moderators is second to none. Everyone involved in any way here has helped me realize my own potentials and abilities, and, in the end, isn't that what WebmasterWorld is all about? Thank You!

I know I'm still rambling on, but I decided to write this while I was watching a full moon rise over the Columbia River last weekend. Just me, the river, the moon and El Dento (my silver doumbeck). If I never posted another message here I wouldn't be missed by anyone after a month... people and jobs are the same way. You leave, and after a while you're forgotten. And I really didn't want that to happen without saying all that other stuff first. On the other hand, I could be honing my skills for another (several months?). So I feel a little awkward too, saying adios then maybe hanging around a while longer. (I remember some parties like that back in the good old days.) Alas, it's been said and done.

Sorry to hear that.

>>>"my worth and worthiness have been called into question"

Are you saying that the parties you have been providing free support for have thrown it all back in your face?

grandpa--

First of all, let me second your assessment of Brett and this great resource he has provided for us.

Secondly, I've always enjoyed reading your posts. I've yet to venture out into the wild and wooly world of money-making web sites, but have taken a few tentative steps in the direction. Your posts, where you've talked about your own struggles and triumphs of getting started, have been an inspiration to me.

I'm sorry to hear of your frustrations, and wish you the best in the future.

grandpa-

It's never to late to start your own venture. ;-)

Well wishes,
Jake

grandpa,

I've really enjoyed your posts! Because I'm probably from the same generation, I usually feel a sort of camaraderie with your words.

Hopefully, you'll find another(s) who appreciates the work you do and acknowledges the value of something they got(get) for free!

grandpa, you certainly would be missed, I for one have enjoyed your down to earth outlook on things.. I hope you stick around for a while and remember you can still do it, even if just for a hobby (leading to opportunities) perhaps.. but in essence make your own fun!

Whatever you do - Be Lucky!

grandpa, I hope you will continue to access this site and provide the posts I've come to look for as a tonic of a sort - no matter where life takes you next.

After all, the net makes us all "next door neighbors" in a way - there's few places the world around any more where you can't log on to WebmasterWorld, y'know?

Take care, be safe, be happy - remember that we care about you and we'll miss you....

Bye grandpa, wish you all the best!

I know the feeling well, but it isn't necessarily so. Especially if someone signs up with grandma for a nick, it'll be a reminder. :)

Thanks for posting here and letting everyone know; it's a thoughtful, considerate gesture toward the membership and we'll sure remember you for that!

Thanks kids. Yes, I'm still around, but the phone interviews have already begun for my replacement. I almost can't wait to see the look of "Sticker Shock" if the boss actually goes with someone worth a whit.

as a tonic of a sort

I think that's a good thing? :) Most people don't like tonics (I know I don't) unless mixed with something.

Jake - with regards to starting my own venture.. well, yes and no. I've minimized quite a bit over the last 5 years, to the point of being able to live out of a backpack. That pretty much leaves the Public Library system as my sole source of internet contact, when I am on the road. Of course, I can and probably will keep my eyes and ears open for any possibilities. Beyond that, my new venture will most likely be some sort of handicraft that I can make and sell on the street in front of the library. Been there and done that. .....hmmm, I wonder if I'm too old to start a rock and roll band....

You are never too old to do whatever you think you need to do....

Keep us posted, grandpa! I'll bet you'll be a lesson to us all!

I'd think a senior citizens mosh_pit or rave would be very interesting. As to the handicrafts, go for it and do a crafts website - either way, you'll be back!

That pretty much leaves the Public Library system as my sole source of internet contact, when I am on the road.

There is a guy called the Hobo Traveller who is supposedly travelling across the world and he appears to be living on affiliate sales and checking in from Internet cafes. Check out his model and look for a different/same angle.

Don't worry grandpa, with all your active participation and contribution to this forum, we all hope you will be the longest living man on earth ;)

If I never get the chance to say this -- good bye.

Sid

PS; remember to take your pills every 3 hours, check your BP every night, and have that diabetic injection every time you eat. Just kidding. I'm not grandma. ;)
