what % of users have smilies turned on at WebmasterWorld? Is it only me or do others like boards w/o smilies?

>50%

Is that 50% have them turned on, or 50% like them (and 50% don't)?

I like smilies, always have. Smilies yes; avatars and photos, no. I wish we had the smilie that shows the big teeth. Love that one!

I'm a fan of low-bandwidth smilies, too. In forums, they allow members to pick up clues as to how a statement was meant to be taken. Interacting in person or by telephone allows a lot of non-text information to get through - facial expression, tone of voice, etc. Straight text lacks those subtleties. I've seen people get very upset on forums because they misinterpreted someone else's comment, particularly if it was meant in a joking way (but didn't come across as a joke). As a frequent wisecracker myself, I use smilies often.

Avatars and photos are irredeemably cheesy and unprofessional - I'm a happy chappie that they're not features on WebmasterWorld.

I agree with Marcia: smileys, yes, avatars, no.

Another vote for smilies :)

Cannot stand avatars or personal quotes (in every message). Especially anigifs. Infact there is a few forums I visit where I turn off images - I wouldn't ordinarily return but the content is spot on.

Wait a minute, it just dawned on me -- is everyone misspelling similes? If so, I might need to change my answer.

I like image smilies :) Better than those ASCII ones. :-)

When men wink at me I'd rather they use the ASCII. There's something that looks more sincere about it. ;-)

>There's something that looks more sincere about it.

yeah, I know why it looks more sincere:
You have to turn your head around vertically to the left to actually see it, ergo, they are not staring right at you ;)

But:

* _ -
\___/

gotya!
Just Kidding :)

When women wink at me, I'd prefer them to do it in big, bold letters, such as:

* _ -
\___/

Theres something that looks immature about it.. :)

Less than 5% of the people turn them on (about 200 regulars have on the gfx ones)

A lot of folks misspell semaphores. ;-)
