I'll need to get connected once a day for about an hour or so to do some site updates. I don't have a laptop with an Inet connection. Might someone know if there are any Inet Cafe's or Libraries with Inet Connections close by to where the Conference will be held?

There is an infinite number of hotels right there. Nearly all have broadband Internet access in a "business center". Typically it will run you around $12 for an hour.

If there's internet at the hotel (I pray for it) feel free to ask me for my notebook. And maybe there's also some kind of surf-station in the lobby like it was in London.

btw Are there any news from the hotel regarding internet access in the rooms or will we have to find some public access points? ;)

$12/hr - not bad considering how important it is to me to accomplish it. ;)

Thanks for the generous offer ThomasB. I may take you up on it.

I'm not sure if the "BUSINESS CLASS" info is about the entire hotel or for every room. Because I can't imagine that rooms have their meeting rooms...

I'll have a laptop there and will need to connect.
I think Brett mentioned the Internet access may be by phone line (dial up) only but the hotel was working on high speed service.

Lorax I'll share.....

I also called the hotel a while a go and the guy didn't know anything about internet.

I snooped around the net to find an alternative for dialup in case there is no wireless available.

Best I found seems to be <clip> account (u should check it out Thomas) with great prices for dialup and validity for a year:

The nearest T-Mobile access point is a Border's Bookstore 3.5 miles away.

Can you say me how internet access from US hotels works?

In Europe you usually can't call the 800 and special numbers used by ISPs as they're blocked by the hotels communication system and local rate numbers are really expensive to dialin. With local calls being free with most Telcos is it possible to use a normal Earthlink / whatever Account without any additional charges added by the hotel?

Internet access changes from hotel to hotel, e.g.

  • Standard data port in phone
  • Ethernet port on desk or wall - only destination is signup screen until you pay or agree to be billed
  • Local calls might be free or charged per call
  • Fixed daily charge e.g. $1 for unlimited local calls whether you use it or not
  • 800 numbers free for x minutes then on an expensive, timed basis
  • Certain calling card numbers blocked, only motel's preferred carrier allowed
  • Wireless Internet access - rarely free, usually through a subscription service
  • etc

The impression I get from a Clarion hotel email is that they have a business center consisting of 1 computer with internet access and a dial up phone jack in each room but no high speed internet setup.

Can someone tell me:
- how do I get a US email account?
- are US phone jacks the same as European?

I hope someone knows. Still figuring out if my own ISP can serve me abroad.

Isn't hotmail a US-email account?

jacks are very similiar, but depends on where you are in Europe. There are for example differences between Germany and Austria.

But which ISP would you suggest for 10 days with 3 hours online per day and no US address?

i've signed up with maglobe - no special charges - smallest package is $14.99 which is via local number dialup 25hrs ($0.59h) and using their toll free line 6 hrs ($2.49h). i tested the account over her in europe (they have world wide access points). one can also use their smtp server for outgoing mails. will be useful also while travelling miami and key west..

just sticky me if url is needed.

Thanks ThomasB, I shouldn't post after midnight!
US dial-up account I meant :)

I think what we have here for analog dial up is RJ11.
Will that work in the US?
