What makes a thread stop showing up on recent posts?

This is not a gripe, I'm just curious: I notice that some threads don't appear or stop appearing on recent posts after a while. They haven't been deleted, as you can see them in their respective forum indicies.

This definitely happens with all Community Exchange/Supporter Forum posts, but is there something that might trigger it for other threads? If it is manual, what makes an admin/mod want to turn off its display?

Thanks!

Added: I'm not asking about a particular thread, so I hope this question doesn't violate the TOS. :)

It is VERY frustrating because no one mentions it to the participants. So unless you go searching through the forums or looking up your "My Threads" page, you have no idea that your thread is still active.
