I am just trying to get an understanding of the formula for the Recent Posts page, which is where I spend most of my time when I am on WW.

I have noticed that some threads disappear from the Recent Posts page even though new posts are added.

Am not complaining although it is quite annoying but was hoping to understand how that works.

i would "guess" ;) that the moderators/admins can chose if they want the thread to show up on the recent threads page.
All threads start to show up on the recent post though, then if they become "bad" a mod/admin can remove them from the recent post list.
(Mostly done to keep the quality up "guessing again" ;) )

I think it is mostly big foo threads or normal threads which get taken off the active post list once they are no longer of interest to anyone (the ebay/dealtime/amazon results thread in Google News seems to be an example of this).

<edit>just guessing though, as above</edit>

We can take them off the active list and sometimes do. When it happens you can still find them by looking at the forum itself; they're still there, of course.

I think the Friday word game posts get deleted from the recent posts after a while too :(

Thanks all, yes I have seen it happen a few times and of course that means I then have to jump away from the Recent Posts Page to the My Threads etc in the Control Panel or do a search if I was interested in it.

Trying to remember which cat / forum etc a thread is in though can take time if you have not posted in it.

As said it has happened before and just happened to one of my Foo threads : [webmasterworld.com...] so was curious for the reasoning behind it.

mm...one thingy i notice in recent posts is: it sometimes start numbering with 2. Does it mean the first thread is deleted/moved/under-moderation? or is it a simply a bug?

Reducing the heat on "The Active" (Recent Posts list) [webmasterworld.com]

Long polling threads (How old is everyone here? What's your favorite pub?) and conversational exchanges (It's really hot/cold here in Kamchatka! My dog/boyfriend/girlfriend has fleas!) not related to webmastering may be exempted from the recent posts cgi after a while, they will still be accessible via the forum index.

>>it sometimes start numbering with 2

Some Google new thread is waiting for approval.
