Why is PubCon held in London?

Why not have a BiergartenCon or something?

Maybe I'm just annoyed that I won't be able to make it, but still I was wondering. Why London? I mean I'm sure we can all get rain at home and smog is not that great. So why no BiergartenCon in Munich, CaféCon in Nice or even a VinotecaCob in Rome?

Sinner

P.S.: I would have said Zurich, but I guess there wouldn't be much enthusiasm for a MuesliCon :)

>> Vinoteca

I know a great place in Montepulciano - beautiful views to boot. But the town closes down at about 10pm so we'd have to provide our own entertainment and bring our own spirits.

I'm all for travelling and sampling different locations. I can't afford London (though I'm going) so what's the difference if it's London, Lisbon, or Queensland?

I think the main reason is travel costs.. Since London is such a huge hub flight costs tend to be cheaper for almost everyone involved..

Also having a large membership base in the UK and having a host a city/country that's main language is spoken fluently by virtually all members probably factors in as well..

Tradition ...and the fact that the skids are greased for the venue. (PubCon 1 was not affiliated with WebmasterWorld. Mike Mackin asked "does anybody want to get together in London for a beer" and 150 seo-types from 11 countries showed up.)

>smog is not that great.

Smog outside will be the least of your lung's worries. Wait until you spend 3 or 4 days with this group of chain-smokers.

Well that's Dublin out then, from 1/1/2004 all public spaces including Pubs will be non-smoking :-(

Being a smoker myself, my lungs are in such a bad state that smog wouldn't matter. My point was more about the weather. With such a beautiful summer, I got used to sit outside on a terrace to sip my beer.

...and I prefer German beer and Italian wine to English ale.

>after

Well, your hide will be smoked clean through after pubcon. There will be enough second-hand nicotine in your bloodstream to carry you for a few months.

Shak, if you succeeded doing this, tell me how.

Do I have to attend PubCon in order to quit?

PEASANT!

Well, if peasants get to drink Italian wine, I don't mind being one :).

london has had the hottest weather ever on record

But did you see the sun? And another disadvantage of London is that there is no place to go and swim to cool down. No lake, no sea, just a dump some call a river ;). I know we are all supposed to be computer guys, thus nerds, thus not used to going outside of the house thus unaccustomed to light (OMG we are vampires!), but I like the sun from time to time, especially when I sit down and have a drink (or maybe two).

How about the French Quarter in New Orleans? :)

Actually, I think some of the German SEO guys tried to get one going in a biergarten in Munich last year - not sure how it went...

Of course, Sinner_G, the Tirol is slapbang in the middle of all your candidates....

Don't knock the Thames. Benjamin Franklin used to swim in it.

>> no place to go and swim

There's Hyde Park, lots of swimming pools and as the old saying goes you can't hit sixes anywhere in the UK as the ball falls in the sea... so lots of seaside resorts. Come and visit me in sunny Southend.

(Somebody else explain about "hitting sixes" please :-))

The word on the street is that this week the temperature in London is going to reach - I'll make a concession here and speak in American to save some translation - 100 degrees F! :-)

speak in American

Is that North America, Central America, or South America? If North America, I presume you're referring to the United States since Canada is on the metric system?

If only I could speak in European or Asian. :)

I didn't know that Canada is on metric. I just know that they drive on the wrong side of the road. If they are now on metric hopefully they'll amend their other ways ;-)

Hey, we're making progress. The soft-dink companies and auto manufacturers think metric. Coke's and Pepsi's are sold in two-liter bottles. Several years ago the 351 cu. in. Mustang mysteriously became the 5.0 liter Mustang. I can't wait to see the nomenclature for the foot-long hot dog. :)

speak in American

When I was in the UK, everyone was speaking in Fahrenheit and miles and gallons and (lots of) pints... Made me feel right at home, even though the gallons and pints are different sizes than the US versions. ;)

Even though everyone was on the wrong side of the road, that one detail is easier to cope with than (I'd imagine) Europe where they reportedly drive on the correct side of the road, but do everything in metrics and celcius.

I'm spending more time over there this year, so I'll have to report back whether it's easier to adjust to England or Belguim.

Pretty much agree with everyone else. When pubcon 1 was organized on WebmasterWorld and pitched to the sponsors as a WebmasterWorld event, london was just the natural place to hold it. We have a huge following in the UK!

The downside is, american beer will never taste the same again and our elevators just don't have the same flare.

...lift going up!

Have a BiergartenCon and you will know what real beer is supposed to taste like ;).

That's against the law! Sticky me for a list of government authorities you can report them to.

Hey, comparing British ales to German beer is like saying "Well, once you've tried red wine you'll never go back to that nasty white stuff!"

Apples and oranges, to-may-to/to-mah-to, etc.

Just going back to the smog bit - I think somebody's been watching too many Sherlock Holmes movies.
