Unread threads act a little strange

too view active posts and too many in the forums

I'm registered here for several weeks so please forgive this "newbie?" question. I've done a site search so far with no successful results...

I've some problems with that "new-post" bullet:

(1) The Recent Posts / Active Posts Lists does not show all new posts. On Page #2 there is never a bullet.

while

(2) the bullet appears in way too many posts in the forums themselves. (There's definitly messages that have no new posts.)

Sounds like a cookie problem, but everything here is enabled (and I've no similar problems on other forum sites using cookies).

Sounds familiar to anybody? Is there a solution?

On Page #2 there is never a bullet.

That's because when the second page loads, it checks the cookie and sees that you've been to WebmasterWorld since all those posts on the second page were made (when you visited the first page). Thus, no red bullet. It's just a funtion of the way the system works.

the bullet appears in way too many posts in the forums themselves.

Unlike the Active list, you have to clear read messages manually when inside the forums by hitting the "Reset Last Read Pointers" link.

Hope this helps. :)

The Recent Posts / Active Posts Lists does not show all new posts.

Sometimes the mods will flag certain threads and remove them from the active list. Not sure what governs that decision, and I don't think it should be done, but it's not my board ;)

Thanks Mardi.
Just missing a "show # of threads" in the Active List Preferences... with the enormous number of posts here at webmaster world, the Active Posts List seems a little bit useless unless you check it every 45 minutes... :-(

The posts tend to get removed for a large number of reasons, take the update threads for one. When they get to 600 posts and everyone is tired of seeing it they lock it and then take if off the active list so it will vanish.

check it every 45 minutes...

Thats what your meant to do ;)

I really wasn't referring to old tired threads (although I agree with you, Craig :)) but to active discussions that for whatever reason a mod feels do not belong in the active. I was in a small but active Foo discussion about stocks one day when suddenly the thread disappeared. I went into Foo looking for it and discovered it was alive, but no longer appeared on the active. Of course, it died shortly after that since only those who went to Foo could see it.

Just missing a "show # of threads" in the Active List Preferences

That would be nice - especially in the morning or evening when there may be a large number of posts you haven't seen. But I suspect letting everyone constantly refresh the last 100 threads or so on the active would have a detrimental effect on bandwidth usage and perhaps the speed of the site.

So, as Creative Craig said, just be sure to check in frequently - it is what you're supposed to do ;)

When ever a post or a thread of mine goes off somewhere, its usualy because its against the ToS ;)

Checking frequently is difficult under certain circumstances like food consumption, certain REM stages and outdoor activities :-)

So I guess the best way to keep an overview over all my posts' threads is using the flag feature intensivly...?

Or use the "My Threads" feature in the control panel. Very helpful without having to set flags - if you've actually posted in the thread you're following.

Mardi:
Good call, thanks, completely missed out on that one :-))) (the 'New messages' indicator there is weird as well - all msgs are marked as new....)

If you scroll down to the end of your thread list, you will see an option to reset the last read pointers. Click it, and the next time you visit your "My Threads" page, only threads with new posts will display the red ball.

45 minutes? How do you stand it that long? I think I'm not the only one for whom it's more like 45 seconds... :)

Different time zone here (Germany), in the middle of the day 45 minutes seems enough :-), shift it 12 hours and 45 seconds is too long..., but my metobilsm can't handle that every night (or let's say 'anymore') :-)
