Can you fix the links on the Google News description to point to the Google Toolbar and Google Adwords forums specifically?

(The link there now appears broken or just not the right thing, IMO.)

I will read it. Just thought I'd mention that we kind of expect to see that front page change when a major event happens, like the declaration that an update is complete (at least with the way we're on pins and needles for some time now with dominic). Brett did make that announcement kind of on post 8 of some thread, but nothing was changed on the front page. Just a thought...

Even in the short time Ive been a member, there has been an unbelievable increase from month to month when Google updates.

Initially I thought - "woah 300 posts in one thread..."

This month there were like, 6 threads (presumeabley all knocked together from countless others), all with hundreds of posts!

It will be good to see an end to a lot of the moany Google posts - a few before have led to decent discussions, but with the sheer level of posting thats going on, most are turning into rants.

A big well done to the mods and admin for keeping control of everything and best of luck for next month! ;)

I think I did a couple of things wrong that were on the list. Especially during the crazy update. Lately, I realize that it better to help others.

Keeping politics out of search engine technology is going to become increasingly hard. The internet is becoming the battlefield for the two opposing sides of politics - the collective versus the individual - and the way search engines work and how people view them will be central to this.

Even worse than "is this the update?" threads are all the "let's guess when the update is going to start" posts. Some people have way too much time on their hands.

I don't mind the whiny update posts or even the "has the update started" threads. I just want those posts limited to those threads.

When the whiners make it into the serious threads I find it very annoying.

Hopefully the google update as a monthlyish thing will end altogether. That will make their jobs easier. A mod at WW isn't easy. Good thing there are so many of them..

I don't mind both either. Maybe you should reconsider and use the description area to add "whine" to clearly identify whine threads (so anyone who could not avoid them easily before, could then). And anyone posting a whine in a serious thread, you could then move to a whine thread. Surely, that's the same amount of editing for you and allows everyone to say their thing (and keep this forum great).

Ps. Doesn't your "Thanks to Google.com for building such a great search engine, and thank you for all the referrals!" count as "Google noise" as defined on the same page? ;-)

The "Understanding Dominic" read-only on the home page is very much appreciated too. It was getting next to impossible to glean the good stuff from the thousands of msg's.

yes, indeed. on sunday the 13th of april the forum passed the 130,000th posting. I thought, that was many....but have a look today:
May 23, 2003 - 8:21am --> 155,407, and growing every single minute in a rapidity no one can reach to read all relevant postings. It took not even six weeks for 25,000 new postings. incredible.

WebGuerrilla, good announcement. I hope especially the new members will take care of the high quality of this forum, and they become more aware of the uselessness of postings that has been replied over and over again.

Haven't really been about recently - since I never have time to read 100-post threads. I have grown pretty fond of this place but I'm far more into the analysis than knowing that A.Nother's site about Widgets is not doing quite as well as John Doe's ;)

Anyway.. thanks.. will hang about a bit more now :)

As many members seem to find Understanding Dominic [webmasterworld.com] helpful I'll try to keep it updated - if necessary.

Since I've put together what's in there until now I found it's some work, though ;)

So whoever thinks the thread Understanding Dominic is helpful may help me: just send me a sticky including the url of thread and msg # if you find an important post of GoogleGuy. - To avoid too many stickies that might be done by that poster GoogleGuy's reffering to.

And please - keep focused :)

Great changes to the Charter WG and Mods.

Suggestion: Change the title of the Forum to Google Analysis

Suggestion: Add Prominent links to the Google Knowledgebase [webmasterworld.com] and Library [webmasterworld.com] at the top of the page.

I discovered WebmasterWorld almost two years ago after, and I loved it because of the real analysis discussions I could have here. Now the noise level is so high its not as useful to me anymore. And that is too bad because I know a lot more and have more to share. I do come in a few times a month and answer questions as my way of sharing what I've learned here.

Hopefully these changes will help.

Here's an idea for the future to keep the noise down. Or let's say an idea in process... How about an Update section. You need to have a certain number of posts before you are allowed to post in there. Like 1000 (which I think keeps me out, but that's ok, I'll get there...) This way, the pros will be the ones speaking the most.

And maybe even throw in a newbie section so that there won't be any spillover to the Google News forum... all the idle chatter can go in the newbie section where those who don't like all that speculation can much easier ignore it...

It's really hard to stop people from venting, especially newbies because many don't bother reading forum charters. We live in a short-attention span world... That's why you need to give them a space to do it that's separated from the meat and we can easily ignore it. Hey, instead of calling it newbie section, how about Google Venting section?

This idea has a lot of appeal. I once did this on a site where I moderated the forum, and split it into 2 forums. The idea was to move the idle chatter away from what I wanted to be the main focus. The nice thing about this strategy is that it makes things so much easier from a moderation perspective. Basically, my work load as moderator dropped dramatically. Since the mods here don't get paid, the less they have to do the better for them. ;)

The problem is, it drains admin/moderator resources and it just plain kills the pro attendance.

a large number of posts is not a parameter to identify high quality posters.
I would prefer the time a member knows this forum (or is member of this forum).

I don't know if more editing is necessary. Google News is far and away the most active section, so as was suggested earlier in this thread, it ought to be split up into a few more topics.

For example

Google Algorithm
Google Update Chat
Google SERPS Quality
Google Bugs
etc.

The people with time on their hands would read all the topics whereas a quick look at Google Algorithm and Google Adwords would be enough for me. Perhaps the beginners would just read the chat section?

I'd rather have this than big brother editing the posts.

you know I think i read the charter when it was first published. Then i read the new one (as requested!) Then i realise i cant remember the old one and dont know how and where it has changed and therefore don't know what i need to do differently... It looks the same to me!

Maybe someone could list what the actual changes are?
