The average webmasterworld user

Who are they?

No pubcon for me, the worst part of which I think is not getting to see people who post here in real life.

I've been wondering, what is the typical WW poster like? Obviously it would be foolish to generalise too much about a site of this stature, but there must be an 'average' user even if it isn't particularly representative.

So who are you guys? 20s/30s/40s/teens? Male/female? Business professional or amateur SEO? Techie or newbie?

Going on gut feeling, I think the most common visitor is probably a fairly tech-savvy, male, 20s, self-employed type SEO/webmaster. But this is clearly a poor stereotype based on my own expectations...

Leaving it to my imagination I'm coming up with some pretty scary amalgamations. Going on nicks doesn't really help - I guess that would make me the mess that's left behind when you smash up your monitor ;)

Well, I can tell you this:

They're older than you think. The 'big guns' are all over 40 and one of our top affiliate guys is over 60.

When I went to pubcon last year I expected alot of 'late twenties' but I was 15-20yrs off the mark.

Saying that though, there weren't that many in that age group from outside USA.

As far as how old we are... here's an idea:

[webmasterworld.com...]

Check Liane's summary - post no 90.
There's a more up to date thread around somewhere from a few mnths ago... but I get a 404 on it.

I'm sure there's another one floating around Foo somewhere about where we are all from geographically too..

Found it!

Geographic locations:

[webmasterworld.com...]

check post 145 from jatar_k for the summary

Personally, 33, female, New Zealand, run half a dozen websites in the day job (only part of the job, not a web-type firm), my own sites at nights/weekends/whenever-the-boss-is-out, social drinker (or anti-social around Google update), likes warm cuddly animals and walks in the rain and...

Thanks for the responses.

The geography doesn't surprise me, as this is pretty much a reflection of English-language web traffic anyway. Interesting that the general age seems to be older than I expected, but i'm not exactly long in the tooth so this is probably a natural bias on my part.

>>DO I KNOW YOU?

Hehe, at least I got someone's number ;)

>>likes warm cuddly animals and walks in the rain

aww... :)

Nick sums it up quite nicely, however here are a few pointers.

Most WW members like a Drink or Ten.
Most like walking, walking and walking just for the sake of it.
If more than 2 webmasterworld members go shopping, they lose a member.
Many are parents with childern at home.
Most of the female members work for themself, whilst a fair few male members work for companies.
Discussion and Debate is preferred over Music in Nite Clubs.
ALL love complaining in Bars and restaurants (me being the biggest culprit)

The above is a snapshot of spending 5 days in Boston with the crew,

a lot of peopel are older than i though when i first came here.also in other inet affilaites or forums i participate. not that there is something wrong with this but for "years" i was talking to them like with my buddies ,thinking they are in their 30ies .Sometimes it maybe sounded little unrespectable. i am 25 :)

what is the best about being young and making money from net is that you can get "rich" in the beggining of your "career/life" and avoid real job or make your life easier from the begin.most "senior" guys have probably 20-30 years of work behind them.i dont have a singe day and i make more than my parents who are few years before retirement:)

what i picked up from pubcon was that it was mostly men, seemed to be around 90% and in their 30s - 40s.

i'm female and work for a company, maybe why i don't post much!

(rather be in the pub discussing...)

There's a thread around here somewhere - or was - where some folks stepped up and bared a few personal tidbits. As Shak & Nick pointed out, we're a mix (though I don't recall that many women at Pubcon Shak). I like to use the label geeks because we're totally into what we do and we love those moments where we can sit down with one or two other geeks and talk shop.

And not just superfluous shop gibberish - I'm talking get down, here's the query statement, CPC & ROI on an Adword campaign for blue widget #1, how do I get rid of that silly space beneath all of my images in that table cell sort of conversations.

I think the core thread of the average WebmasterWorld member is that love for what we do, a desire to improve and share in a project that has taken on a life of it's own.

phew - that's out there - I'd better stop here. ;)
