how to unsubscribe from thread?

I posted in a thread last October; how do I stop receiving notices?

I was interested in a thread last year, and posted to it last October. When I did, I selected the box to receive e-mail notifications of new postings to the thread.

I would like no longer to receive these notifications. The instructions for unsubscribing say to edit the message by unselecting that box. However, since this was a message from last year, I can no longer edit the post.

How do I unsubscribe at this point?

Thank you.

You can notify the moderator of that forum or an administrator. I think there is a 2 hour window for editing a post. After that you need to contact a mod or admin.

I have found this a bit of an issue at times (especially that one time I made the mistake of subscribing to an update thread :) )

Why couldn't 'flag this thread' be synonomous with email notification? This way anyone can get email notification of a thread, including those that aren't posting in it.. Just a thought..

Particularly if it's a very long thread that will take a long time to weed through to find your post, make sure to include a link to the thread itself and tell which post is yours in order for a mod or admin to have an easy time unsubscribing you.

We've got some threads that are over 400 posts long, it isn't always easy to find a particular post. Knowing where it is makes it much easier and quicker.

A lot of us flag posts without requesting notifications. It's best if any email is opt-in, so we have to specifically request the notifying emails. I would not like to get notified of update threads, those get LONG and I'd be notified about every 30 seconds. :)

For someone not posting in a thread, they could subscribe to the forum in the control panel, like during an update or while a certain thread is active, and then unsubscribe when they want to.

they could subscribe to the forum

Imagine doing that in Google news - I think my mail server would be overloaded in no time :)

I see your point about people flagging threads without being subscribed, but it would be nice to not have to 'edit' a post or contact a mod to subscribe or unsubscribe. Just my views anyway. It's probably not a problem for most.. I quite simply don't subscribe to any threads unless I really am interested (ie. if I asked a question), because it's too much of a pain to get off the list.

I think one solution would be to only notify people that there have been new posts on that thread since they last viewed it.

For example, I post to a thread, and overnight 10 people reply, I should only get 1 message that there are unseen replies, not 10 messages. When I visit that thread then it resets the "has_been_notified" flag, and I am notified the next time someone replies. I think this is how some other forums work ( phpbb? )
