Why can't you post urls'

I replied to another post to point out the similarities between two sites. Sorry about this, but why is it wrong to do this? To be honest, it sounds silly to me.

If it's for solicitation reasons, then I kind of understand; however, no one is holding a gun to your head and telling you to go to a url submitted on this web site

Much discussed, but a basic reason is that we want the knowledge and strategy involved in solving web problems to be made generic and posted for others to use in the future. Swapping urls short-circuits that process.

Many users on this web site, either have complicated questions or don't present their questions clearly. Then people who reply to the original post ask,"could you please post the actual script that your having problems with." It seems that their is a lot of relaying back and forth.

Another danger lies in seemingly innocent "take a look at this site" posts. Close scrutiny here can cause a site to be exposed and banned in a matter of minutes. It's not really feasible to expect WebmasterWorld moderators to be fully assured that member XYZ actually owns the site(s) mentioned.

Sometimes that's true. In CSS we're particularly prone to 'test pages' - The problem lies not only in the 'is it a sneaky url drop' but more importantly (for me anyway) that that 'test page' will not be there in a few months when someone looking for help finds the thread.

The thread is useless to anyone and just spawns 100 more like it.

So, we don't do it.

I've spent a lot of time on these boards. If you spent any time here you would also know how foolish your last statement was. The mods on this board spend a ridiculous amount of time getting rid of spammers.

Take some time and read the related posts, maybe then you will understand. If not, I'm sure there are other fourms which allow the posting of URLs.

All i can say there is a few reasons why this site is more popular than top search engines, and the NOT posting URL thing is one of them.

I think it fair to say that many (most) web forums are plagued by spammers posting their own URLs. These days it can be as much to get the benefit of a backlink as anything else.

WebmasterWorld has gone to a deal of trouble to stop drive by spammers - I think I am correct in saying they ban hotmail and yahoo email addresses for that reason.

Most of us here have been frustrated to start with at being unable to post URLs. However....as time as gone by you realise that it is in fact a good thing. You can debate problems in the abstract, avoid flames, spams, etc.

In short, we like it ;)
