Here are the results of our summer/fall long test of European directories:

Did not return enough traffic to break even or make it worthy of the effort:

lycos.fr
AOl.fr/Exalead
lycos.it
lycos.de
bellnet.de
allesklar.de
t-online.de
fireball.de

Did return good traffic:

MSN.it (through Looksmart, too bad their relationship is ending)
Noamde - But can't make new submissions - see other thread on this: [webmasterworld.com...]

Which other ones has everyone found return more than enough traffic to justify their cost or effort in submitting?

In terms of direct traffic directories are generally not worth it. You have to be lucky to land in a heavily visited cat on top of the pile, or get promoted by an editor. There are exceptions of course. When Allesklar powered MSN.de you could strike gold with a good listing.

I do directory submissions to give sites a solid foundation with independant links. It tends to give sites staying power.

One directory that is really worth it is Kvasir [kvasir.no] in Norway. It is so popular among the users that it accounts for nearly 50% of the Norwegian traffic to all our domestic sites.
