Hello,

i am targeting german-speaking countries with a seo campaign.
I will submit to google, fast, inktomi, altavista.
I need to submit to residual indexes.
So far I know Tricus, Yoodle, Search.ch
I don't know if Fastbot.de powers big or medium players.
I also need to submit to local directories such as Web.de
Please add other players if any.

the results that are showing up on Fastbot are not from the crawler that is called Fastbot. There are a lot of pages out there which show your own UserAgent and IP address. Search for one of them on Fastbot and you'll see in the SERPs that the robot that was visiting this page did identify itself as "Googlebot" and was even using an IP belonging to Google Inc ...

Another point is that the query you posted is showing only 51 results! A crawler that built an index as large as Fastbot (claims to) would have much more impact.

Also they power the german meta search metager and it would be quite illegitimate to power a meta search by a meta search.

Fastbot is IMHO no meta engine, but just a Google clone. And this is really good for e.g. Metager, because this way they get Google results.

Perhaps Fastbot is running its own crawler to build an index, I don't know. All I know is, that now (and also the past several months) Fastbot is showing (some kind of) Google results.

I know something more about fastbot... one of my former
"friends" worked for them.

fastbot is located in Hamburg Germany. There are actually
15 developers working on this project but it still has
beta quality. They started as a meta-engine in 2002 but
are now building up their own index for several months.
They have about 600.000 querys/day. I dont think fastbot
has good quality and I dont like the guys working on
fastbot. They try to do everything without advertising so
they distroy the market. They only can do that because
they have venture capital.

Don't get any hits - 600K daily? Hardly. The fact it's done without advertizing, backed by VC funding (erm - are you sure?) in my book speaks for the project, not against it.

No, I dont think so its easy to do that if you have enough
money. I dont think that 600.000/day is much. Google has
15 mio!

Google has at least 10 times that much, but they're the most popular SE in the World.

600K searches per day is one heck of a lot for a "small" search engine. That is very much second tier and bordering on first tier.

fastbot is just a crappy engine with nothing good and
no great features. Just forget it.

Well - back on topic: The real problem is that even what we call second tier engines/portals, like Fireball, Metager, or even Web.de, do have such a minimal marketshare that I just tend to forget to even monitor them. The whole sleuth of third tier engines is totally neglectable. All those little engines out there are 98% of the time dodgy affiliate linkfarms which you only see when they spam your logs. It's sad and annoying, but such is the search engine landscape 2003/4.

This is hard to believe. They seem to be the only search engine which can build an index without doing any web crawling.

Hardly surprising, because they are queried by Metager, which alone accounts for about 200.000 to 400.000 queries a day.

It's sad and annoying, but such is the search engine landscape 2003/4.

I still hope this will change in 2004.
