That's an interesting report laurellyon, but enormous! :)
Oh, welcome to WebmasterWorld, by the way.
I'm just trying to download the report now there seems to be lots of interesting stuff regarding user feedback and habits.
Can't wait to get to grips with it.

Great find! At long last some detailed figures on Spanish SE usage. I notice that Terra has Fast onboard. But the most surprising thing is MSN's poor showing. They usually do a lot better than that because of the built in functions of Internet Explorer.

Laurellyon: Could you explain to us the method used by AIMC for this survey?

47,068 valid questionnaires out of a total of 54,498 completed automatically via Internet between 22nd October and 12th December 2002. Banners were put on several Spanish websites and the surfers clicked and filled in the survey. Some were also sent via email because the survey gave the option to recommend to a friend by email.

People were enticed into completing the survey by the offer of certain prizes (laptops, etc.).

Excellent post!

Do you know how to submit a site to www.msn.es (directory)?

And to www.eresmas.com?

thank you

Sounds like a fairly good survey base.

In comparison with the data I had so far two changes are significant: The rise of Google to the top, and the low preference of msn for searches.

A bit puzzling is the placement of Yahoo.com. I suppose it's actually es.yahoo.com, and ct.yahoo.com, the catalan version.

The biggest surprise? Altavista with 8,8 %! That must be one of the best markets worldwide for AV.

Anyway, I would love to have some spanish members commenting on the validity of those numbers, based on their logs.

Laurellyon, thanks for the post!

Great ressource, thanks Laurellyon

I run some sites in Spain (with spanish content :-) ) and think that this data is pretty good. My only objection is that Terra is probably too high up listed. Terra refered by far the most visitors to this survey, and that might have increased considerably their pourcentage in visits and SE usage.

I have less Altavista than 8.8% but not such a significant difference as with Terra.

I don't have any statistical evidence, but I've observed that some spanish users seem to assume that their ISP portal is an unavoidable step onto the internet, or even that their portal *is* the internet, rather like a great many US users think that Yahoo or Google is. This would explain the popularity of Terra, eresmas etc, which are otherwise not very interesting sites.

>ISP
That's what I figured and what made me a bit sceptical. The survey as you described it seems to suggest people were asked for their fav search engine or directory though.

Yes, they were asked to name their favourite search or directory site, but I think that the familiarity of the isp portals makes them used more - it's a circular argument, but then, people tend to stick with what they know.

People could list multiple SEs in this question

Average number of directories/SE mentioned was 2.3, so people were naming several of them (without indicating the current frequency of use of each of them).

The one puzzling me is copernic (n. 14). Anybody knows how it could get in that list?

Yeah, so while it gives us some good indications I'd say it's rather a popularity contest than hard marketshares.

Still valuable insight into a market we don't have too many info available.

>copernic
Not sure here, but I think it's even more popular in France.
