For the last centuries Russian had been the most important second language all over central Europe.
Today, all the youth between Poland and Bulgaria wants to learn is English, claims a report on eubusiness.com [eubusiness.com]

After 1989 and the subsequent breakdown of the Sovjet Union German was on the rise as a second language. But that was only shortterm. Today with only a few exceptions English has put German to the status of a third language, with French and Russian trailing behind.

This holds true for Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary, Bulgaria, Slovenia, probably Romania, Slovakia, Bosnia and Croatia as well.

Exceptions are the baltic countries of Latvia, Lithunia and Estonia with large russian language populations.
