do you know of any statistics about the use of google and other search engines in these countries (or just for europe) is there any real competition in europe for google? I think in the us with msn, aol, yahoo it's a little bit different right?
I'd say so. Take a look in the FAST Forum [webmasterworld.com]. Fast is pretty important in Europe.

www.webhits.de gives good overview on its page [webhits.de...] Google has 58% plus Yahoo 9% plus some small partners. Do not overestimate FAST. At least in Germany its major partner is t-online. But they have only 4% of searches in Germany.

The Webhits stats are derived from graphical counters on websites. Many many sites and most big sites do not have those counters. Nevertheless the general trends meet reality. Exact measurement of course is not to be achieved by such a method.
